Re: Cairns Holiday Inn to become Doubletree

This is good news and hopefully there will be more DoubleTrees in regional areas.

Looks like the Alice Springs experiment is working.

Re: Cairns Holiday Inn to become Doubletree

Two Hilton properties in Cairns. This will be interesting.

It will be even more interesting as to what will be done to the rooms and the property. I stayed in the HI Cairns in 2009 and the room felt very much like a family holiday apartment than hotel room. Probably may have been given at least a linen refresh since then.

I wonder if this will have an effect on prices charged for the property.

The HI has had a Reno as well as a rebrand since you stayed.

Re: Cairns Holiday Inn to become Doubletree

So no IHG property in Cairns or Darwin soon ..... on current form you have to wonder if the Townsville's HI will be next to go ?

No word on the Yorkey's Knob rolling side show. I'm surprised 'Sports Bet' or a similar outfit have not set up a book on the odds of Y.K. taking off or falling in a heap by a certain date .... something roughly along the lines of the Badgerys Creek book they are running.

There doesn't appear to be any sign of any other high end entry into the Cairns market to raise the bar on what is currently on offer ......

Also on the QLD hotel line...... it looks like the chances of a new 5 star players entry into Brisbane market might have vaporised with the 5 star hotel component of 222 Margret St project appearing to have had the red line drawn through it .... Latest design intent for 222 is for a near all apartment build with a marketing campaign on that basis underway in key OS markets.

Matress run time in the same program soon - excellent :D

October 1, 2014

Who's going to make a reservation for the opening night?

My thoughts exactly!

I must admit, we were booked into the HI CNS in Nov.2012 but walked into the foyer and thought "yuck". We cancelled in favour of a drive to Mirage Port Douglas. A mattress run may have merit though!

Personally, I think the next three AU destinations crying out for a Doubletree is Hobart, Hamilton Island and Newcastle in that order.

Agree re Hobart and Newcastle but I always thought Hamilton Island is worthy of a Conrad style resort.
It's good to see more doubletrees popping up in Australia but what about Conrad and Waldorf? With the growing luxury travel from Asia, surely there is room for at least one of each.

HTI used to be a Crowne Plaza and then Accor, it's not really a hotel type destination, more a Wyndham resort in terms of potential.

Great news for those wanting to maintain status in Australia. I wonder what the room rates will be like in comparison to the Hilton.

Sad to see IHG lose another property in Australia.

Conrad would be lovely, but I couldn't see it happening anytime soon as it would require an entirely new complex and now is not really the time in the AU tourist industry to start building and let's face it, HTI wouldn't want a Conrad style opposition to Qualia and let's not forget Hayman services the 6 star end of the market quite well. I included HTI as a potential for a Doubletree as negotiations could take place to take over one of the existing complexes and of course the big thing for HTI would be bringing back an international chain presence on the island. The current hotel is quaint but needs improvement and with the apartments next door, there is scope for a hotel/residences style like HSP and H-ZQN. Since the Oatleys took over HTI, the whole place has been slowly restored to better than it was when Keith Williams had it and although it was allowed to run down after Williams lost it, it is certainly back up there and ready to face the next tourism boom (which will happen).

At least three aboriginal tribes have made 'claim' to be traditional owners of the land proposed to be site of casino.

Locals and Qld government are hopeful project will proceed.

And confusing the heck out of tourists as two of them are less than 500 metres apart on the same street.

If you come to DRW and your cabbie is "confused" then ask them to stop the meter. The change of brand happened 12 months ago and the cab drivers know perfectly well which is which. Of course you also have to know exactly which one you're going too also.

Great news for those wanting to maintain status in Australia. I wonder what the room rates will be like in comparison to the Hilton.

Web site is indicating a flat $169/night AP from opening on 1/10 right through .... I suspect this is not 'real' sustained pricing though, just indicative and wanting to get people interested for the opening.

Hilton cairns is asking 250-300+ for the same dates (AP). Having not stayed at either property I don't much know what to make of that. I did a recent DT conversion late last year and I'm somewhat leary of being an early customer to these conversions as a result.

DT in general, in SE Asia at least, has treated me very well so I'm very interested in this CNS property but might wait to see how well they did revamping the place from the old HI.

Yup, this is great for mattress runs! Hopefully 2 HH properties in Cairns will help keep the Doubletree's prices reasonable.

As a HI have rarely paid more than $100 for an ocean view.

Re: Cairns Holiday Inn to become Doubletree

Anybody with a TR on the new property yet - other than the ones posted in the Hilton "how do they treat you" thread?
