Any tips for staying at Hilton Cairns?

Have any specific rooms been recently renovated?

I'm planning to visit sometime in August. What's the weather going to be like?

thanks

Chucksta

The spa floor is the most recently rennovated. I think its floor 8.
You have two views one over the esplande & city, no actually three views now!; one over the inlet ( my preference ) and one looking at another hotel type apartment building. All rooms have a balcony.

Ask for the casino end of the bldg if u want to over look the esplande otherwise yr view is blocked by the new bldg.

Apart from that not much else i can add.

The ladies in the exec floor are all very nice. Aug weather shld be very nice.

Just starting to heat up again.

Hopefully it is not windy and you will enjoy a great trip to the reef.

My only stay there was as an HH gold; I was upgraded to spa corner room on Level 8 (IIRC) and given Lounge access.

Nice place, it's as posted by SF&.

Been there twice. Once as a Gold and as a Silver. Last visit was early 2006.

As a Gold, upgraded to Exec floor (9 I think) for a marina/inlet view (Late 2005). As a silver, they found me a nice room on floor 7 I think (Early 2006) with partial marina view.

The hotel used to have about 10 different room types depending on the floor and view. However, these have been merged into a much smaller number of room types . The building next door definitely affected the view from several of the rooms on each floor.

One thing to watch out for is that the hotel has a wind tunnel through the centre at times, and it is very breezy on the top floors. Doors will easily slam, and "DND" signs can go missing unless tucked into the door.

I like the hotel overall, but like every other Hilton in Australia bar a cpl, it is starting to show it's age. The staff are nice, and have the "laid back Cairns" attitude that is everywhere up there, but also go out of their way to be friendly and help.

I find eating at the outside downstairs Mondo's Cafe to be nice. Watch out for mozzies if it's a bit damp though :)

Don't know the best way to avoid a "view the next door building" room. The inlet view rooms are absolutely wonderful though.

PS. If you like Indian, then you should try 'Marinades'. One of my favourite Indian Restaurants in Australia Marinades in Cairns CBD, Queensland Australia • cairnsdining.com

I stayed at hotel last nov. and again april. upgraded to spa rm. floor 8 both times. first time was inlet side. I didn't mind it as I could sit out on balcony and watch the tourist boats come back in, made me feel I was on hol's (which I wasn't). Had a non-smoking rm. but person on one side of me liked cigars on their balcony unlike the non-smoker that I am.

In april I had esplanade side and my rm. still had an esplanade view but also sea view blocked by new building. Tickles me seeing and hearing (with balcony door open) the double decker red bus and young tourist on board having a good time. Not putting Cairns down, but imho does not compare with views in cities like red busses in London or New York.

The first time I had spa rm. I was glad I was on my own as glass wall from bath to bedrm. I thought may not suit me if I was sharing. I felt a dork when family member visited me and I made the comment to hear there was a blind .

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The ex. lounge has a good breaky. The pool is large and colourful. Watch out for the winds as already stated. In Nov. one of the deck lounges went flying into the spa and just missed my grandies. Enjoy your stay.

I stay there about once a month.

Aim for Level 9 which is the executive floor and has the customary (small) lounge with efficient friendly staff and a nice view of the esplanade and city.

Otherwise aim for a spa room - which have very good upgraded bathroom/spas

be sure to get a room on the estuary side of the building since the new tower block (harbour lights) has just been built blocking the view on the esplanade/ocean side - the view of the river to the forested hills is great to wake up to

mondos down on the water front is fine for a casual meal, especially at lunch when you can see the marina - put your food on your hotel bill to get a few more hilton honors points!

for relaxed dinner try Piccolo Cucina in Lake St by the mall/raxi rank but book ahead 07 4051 5137 if you like local family run italian

or Perottas by the regional art gallery (Shield St) is a relaxed place to have a feed and the Pinot Noir (Kooyong Massale) is a winner

..both of these are walking distane to the hilton

..the casino across the road is a dive and the security guards are a disaster zone

let me know if you need more local knowledge of the cairns region...

thanks for all your replies

i'm booked on QF from PER to Cairns direct. The flight arrives at 04:30am!

Are there going to be taxis available from the airport?

Does the hilton have a shuttle bus? Is this free???

thanks

Chucksta

Yeah there should be cabs at the airport, but you may have to wait a little while for one. Don't dawdle in the terminal - get out to the taxi rank fast as queues grow quickly.

Can't recall a Hilton shuttle. Best you inquire with them or check their website.

Have you pre-sorted with Hilton about checking in so early?

Yeah... i had to book the night before...

Maybe I should book an airport transfer then... I really don't want to risk not having taxis available..

Does Hughes Limo operate in Cairns? Or is it possible to book a taxi?

 When I did this I hired a car.

After the flight landed, I hit the QP for a shower, breakfast and a coffee (as a WP).

I collected the car around 6:30 and drove into town. Checked in at the Hilton 11am; my room was ready and I had access for no additional charge. I was prepared to come back later if necessary.

The hire car really helped as it gave me a mobile base until I checked in.

Is the Cairns QP going to be closed in Aug? I wonder what the temp arrangements will be like?? Any ideas??

I believe it will be the old Golden wing lounge to the North of the central area after security.

What's the best floor to stay on at the Hilton Cairns?

Have any floors been recently renovated?

I have booked the King executive room. Which floor should I request when I check in?

thanks again...

Sorry, disregard my previous post. I missed page 1! :p

One final question: Will a 15" laptop fit in the Inroom Safe at Hilton Cairns?

chucksta, i've been upgraded twice and it was spa rm. on floor below ex. lounge. it was fine. the staff are very friendly and helpful. i would have liked to experience top floor to see if any difference.
hope all goes well for you, including taxi.
