Came across this gem on FT.

Crux of the story is that a DYKIWA SQ PPS elite flying business JFK-FRA-SIN got stuck in a DF line at FRA and reached the gate 5 mins late [5 mins after the scheduled departure of the flight, not 5 mins after close of boarding] and was annoyed (read p#@sed off) that SQ wouldn't hold the plane or get it to return to gate especially for him, and as a result he was stuck at FRA for 10+ hours. He let loose on SQ's facebook page.

Very funny, especially some of the vitriolic responses directed to the said individual on the facebook page. SQ response was brief, but gave their side of the story, and quite reasonable.

I know this is meant to be funny, but I can't laugh at it.

Because I cant believe how stupid and conceited the DYKWIA is. Nuts.

Not a peep on Facebook from him after the brief tete-a-tete with SQ...unsure if he's swallowed his humble pie or just being stuck up.

This has to be a troll post!

No way could anyone be that selfish, surely?

I suspect he may be on the flight back from FRA. I wasn't so much laughing at the DYKWIA rant (although it is pretty ridiculous, it just reinforces the stereotype of a DYKWIA) but some of the people commenting back. I do wonder if this was a wind-up and not really true, but there are much cleverer wind-ups that don't make the author look like a total di#$.

SQ PPS...you have no idea.

Of course this isn't necessarily representative of the character of all PPS members, but when it manifests itself as such, no one can be surprised.

If he was originally from Singapore that's an even more dangerous compounding factor.

Meh, most commenting back - OK some were vitriolic, maybe uncalled for (they tend to go against either pax or airline) - but plenty giving him the right assessment.

If it's a wind up then I'm confused about the approach and desired outcome. I can't see either as productive.

Could the next post be, "Now flying FRA/SIN. Related my story to crew. Very good service and crew apologetic. All is forgiven." Give me a break........

No, I don't know what SQ PPS is. Is it top tier? Like CL or something?

Essentially PPS is a separate but concurrent loyalty programme for SQ. "Status" on PPS (only two tiers - PPS and Solitaire) is accorded based on SQ travel in First or Business class only, based on spend (not mileage). I believe it is something like SGD 25k for admission to the PPS tier.

PPS members are at least the first swathe of loyal SQ flyers who are accorded exclusive benefits and - in the words of some - actually have their loyalty to the airline recognised. Normally in some cases they are cut a break in terms of changes, shifting and all that jazz, but they have a bad reputation at times of simply throwing their status around for selfish demands (a case of a few or more highlighted nut heads tarring the entire cohort).

I was most amused by the fact that he was adamant that he was "only" 5 minutes late, whilst claiming that he got to the gate 5 minutes after what was the departure time.

If one flies enough to be PPS, surely they are well aware of what boarding time is?

And finally, for those that have been through FRA & SIN lately, are the duty free prices that much better at FRA? Because that's his excuse for being late...

A rich spoilt brat it seems whose career seems to be blogging, priceless response from SQ - perfectly clipped and devastating reminder of the boarding time 45mins prior.

This is why I think he must be "that" kind of PPS member. He harks on about how SQ hold flights for late pax. I'm thinking that is usually in the cases of:
  • More than one passenger is late (e.g. about 20 or so), and
  • They are late due to a really uncontrollable circumstance, e.g. late incoming aircraft, not the line for the cashier at the duty free store.

The layover of the SQ flight JFK-FRA-SIN at FRA is nominally as short as it needs to be. The first security screening already saps some time off, then that would likely only be enough time for a shower and a drink at the lounge (if that, depending on gate location), let alone this is not enough time to just saunter in duty free, window shop and complete a purchase in time. You go, you know what you want, you take it and you go to pay. Then get the hell back to the gate.

In any case, a logical rebuttal to his approach would be unlikely to have a reprimanding effect.

...and the entire post thread has been taken off the SQ Facebook page.

I guess he retreated with his tail between his legs, or who knows.

Maybe he should spend some more and get to solitaire and then see if they will hold the flight ;)

I am thinking the opposite ... If you had looked at his LinkedIn page it's likely he could be quite a influential dude (in the IT world).

The FT thread has been taken down as well.

Influential for the wrong reasons in this case. He is not God, and should stop acting like one.

But interesting that pretty much everything about this incident is gone (except archives, and the thread on this forum for that matter).

If they know you're not to far away an airline will hold a flight for a few minutes. I do remember as a kid with his dad making haste through airports to planes being held. But that was in the days when a Sydney Melbourne economy flight cost $750 one way.

So while it can and does happen, it was pretty stupid to complain about it not waiting while shopping.
