Higher taxes in QFF redemptions . .

Being semi retired and requiring J award seats at lowest cost long haul, points are the way to go for us two, we do it one of three ways to achieve this, use QFF points out of HKG or buy AS or AA miles (when offers are on) and depart from anywhere OW airlines to/from, the two latter have extremely low fees unlike stingy Qantas.

QF metal awards ex-HKG are good value in the scheme of things. I just got home with a J award HKG-xSYD-ADL with a HKD905 (AUD150) co-payment.

Using QFF points for domestic economy has never really ever been a good value redemption (unless sometimes if it's on a monopolised route)

To book wife and daughter on my 8:30pm SYD-BNE flight would have cost ~$340. The next flight, and last flight of the night, at 9:45pm was ~$170 or 8,000 QFF points + ~$38. VA was ~$200 and JQ and TT were also close to ~$200.

I got a minimum value of 1.5c/QFF point but in reality I got a lot more as I managed to get them moved to my flight in one of the last seats on flight.

Is there a limit in relation to the number of legs to how much the taxes are reduced from departing HKG? For instance, if I price a OWE fare departing HKG it doesn't really reduce the taxes and fees if I were to depart ex-Aus.

I don't disagree. I just said about the monopolised route because that was the thing that come to mind getting value on domestic routes, as well as late flights per your example.
