Hidden city ticketing... to catch another flight

Sounds about as good as you can plan it - good luck and let us know how it goes incl
- transit in DOH, AY BP provision etc
- dealing with QR regarding the no show (I think non same-day connection helps you here).
- dealing with the AY refund
- and dealing with the next QR booking (whenever that may be)……

To clarify the plan:

Day 1: Australia to DOH in economy on QR (booked on ticket 1). I do not plan to cross immigration and remain airside in transit for 4h until next flight. If necessary to obtain boarding pass landside, I can enter immigration and simply check in again. My passport allows me to enter visa free to Qatar for 90 days (longer than most passports)

Day 1: DOH to ARN award business on AY (booked on ticket 2). I will not return to DOH after this.

Day ~7: Refundable ticket ARN to DOH on AY (booked on ticket 3), which I will cancel for refund and not fly

Day 10: DOH to FRA in economy on QR (booked on ticket 1) - this is the throwaway HCT flight

Day 14: Return from Europe via DXB to Australia on EK (Booked on ticket 4)
I think the return ticket to DOH is a waste of money.

Plans change. Airlines get that. As long as you’re not making a habit of it, there should be no implications for your FF status.

I don’t see any issues with immigration… they will have cleared you to arrive in DOH (cause that’s where flight 1 is going), but plenty of people connect on separate tickets, so no biggie if you don’t enter.

I mostly agree. Though if I do proceed it will be a fully refundable ticket that I will cancel as soon as I leave Doha on day 2. So there is no waste of money per se, just hassle. And waiting for the money to come back; I’m ok without liquidity

I don’t think I’ll go through with buying the extra ticket, but thought to add it in as a proof of concept that the plan should work.

FWIW pre pandemic I’ve backpacked in the Middle East, Central Asia and South America on various one way/return ticket combos and multi airline connections. Never once been asked anything remotely akin to a question such as show me all your flight tickets planned for the next month.

I’m not sure there have been any data points to support some of the concerns raised in this thread.

Except there is no flight back to DOH to take the DOH-EUR leg? Just really interested in this as it affects me on my trips to DXB.

@quantumise
looks good to me

Greetings from the Nordics. Just a follow up report.

In the end I indeed booked a refundable ticket from Scandinavia back to DOH through Finnair, as proof of a logical travel plan.

ADDIT: First, to clarify my intentions of this convoluted plan:
- I have many QFF points to use but it is near impossible to use them to get Qsuite award seats any longer. So I got an award flight with AY in their new J seat for my second leg of the journey to Europe.
- The cost of a single direct flight to Doha is much higher (nearly $1000) than if one were to buy a multi city ticket to Europe. It does not matter if the flight to Europe is the same day or not (in my case it was weeks later), as long as the final destination is Europe.

1. Managed to check in online and obtain a mobile boarding pass for both QR and AY flights.

2. Flight to DOH straight forward. Was asked at the local departure in Australia how long I would be in Qatar for and I said only a day as I would fly to Europe same day. Presumably they could see the second flight a week later on the same booking. No further questions asked. My QFF number was not linked to flight.

3. Landed in DOH. As I already had my boarding pass, there was no need to exit through immigration, and I remained airside the whole time. During the initial security check (when you enter the transit area), I scanned the BP of the first QR flight. Then was able to use the AY mobile boarding pass to access the amazing new Al Mourjan garden lounge.

4. At departure gate in DOH, provided my AY mobile boarding pass. Was asked when I was planning on returning, and I showed them the refundable AY ticket on my phone. No further questions asked.

5. New AY business seat is very interesting and spacious in sitting position. It is like being on a sofa/lounge chair at home. Lying flat it is very long as well.

6. Mid flight, using the free Finnair Wi-Fi, I canceled the refundable ticket back to DOH.

7. Received confirmation of refund, and money back to card.

8. As I didn’t initially divulge my QFF number, I’ve now made a claim for status credits on the initial Aus-DOH flight. Doing this prior to the next leg on the ticket which is the throwaway hidden-city QR DOH-Europe I will be eventually canceling. Will see what happens. I doubt significant ramifications for QFF for a one off event (and given not the best relations between QR and QF).

So in summary:

You bought a ADL-DOH and some days later a DOH-LHR on the same ticket.

But your actual intended destination was ARN
So you got a separate DOH-ARN plus another refundable ARN-DOH arriving back in DOH in time for the DOH-LHR.

But after clearing QR immigration you cancelled ARN-DOH and will also be cancelling DOH-LHR to finally effect the hidden city

Seems that your ARN-DOH provided a logical cover because I get the impression that they can see the outbound DOH-LHR and therefore asking when you will be back for that flight??

👍

I forgot to add - No need to clear immigration at Doha. All internal transit airside.

I’m not sure on that last statement - the question was asked by the AY gate attendant, and I don’t know if this was just a routine question or a targeted one.

What a ripper of a story!

Impressive

One way tics would be part and parcel of airlines day to day operations and beating them at their own game (asking you to pay more for less miles could be seen as profit gouging) is an amusement

My last Eurotrip was one way F reward to Amsterdam before the Sept 2019 devaluation with a departure about a month later from ARN on a return F tic to Australia, avoiding the Australia tax (as at that point it was half the price of the other direction) and benefiting from a triple points offer

Well I got home - and then Covid hit.
The beauty of those F fares is they are fully refundable so I was refunded the unused second half which with an exchange gain in my favour saw 56% of the price back on my credit card! Even if I never got the triple points for the return leg…

Unfortunately no F fares are anything close to that price now!

That’s fantastic! Thankfully the pricing algorithm caters to the trend of the masses; I think it is absolutely fair game and entirely ethical for savvy consumers and experienced frequent flyers to bend the system as it is for our benefit.
Hope you enjoyed F class then, presumably was an A380? Will be keen to see what the new A350 product is like.

@quantumise
Was it a quick refund?
Haven’t received it yet but the amount is trivial and I’m surprised I was even able to get anything back in the first place!

the airlines can not simply explain why they charge you MORE to fly LESS
this More-on price for the shorter distance is effective profit glutting because high demand pushes prices higher
Competition sadly lacking with More-ons - the price
Tom: You can tell who's running the country by how much clothes people wear, see?Dick: Do you mean that some people can afford more clothes on, and some people have... less on? Is that what you mean?Tom: That's right.Dick: I don't understand.Tom: See, the ordinary people, you'd say that the ordinary people are the less-ons.Dick: So who's running the country?Tom: The morons. smothers brothers come to mind

However status runs benefit from slower journey at a lower price
Fly more Pay Less

The Less-on gains you larger benefits
