As the others said best to go for a business award outright. Points upgrade s are never guaranteed. A higher status member decides to try for an upgrade or someone buds a business sest then no upgrade.

Depends on where you’re starting from and hoping to get to. Paid whY to J is still reasonable compared to many other uses of QFF points.

Which is why a “classic” points upgrade request on a paid (upgradable) ticket is probably your best bet if you can’t book a Biz reward directly.

But as others have said, there’s no guarantee it’ll come through. Factors include how busy the flight is, how many higher status PAX also requesting upgrades etc. A solo traveller will be luckier than a say a family of four.

General rule of thumb… for international travel expect to fly in the cabin you have booked. Unless you have close to top tier status with an airline.

For domestic it’s easier… lots of premium seats, you can confirm upgrades in advance, and if not sometimes an upgrade can come through even at the last minute. Plus the max flight time is around 5 hours, so bearable if you miss out.

What are the airlines you would fly on and what is your status?

As other have said, your FF status is very important in working out the likelihood of getting an upgrade.

Status helps, Qantas club also helps. Two years ago, I got upgrades from Premium Economy to Business, SYD to LHR, both ways on points for myself & Mrs. Ozchorlton.
One was New Year's day, so if you pick a less busy day to fly, it appears to help. (Boxing Day / New Year's day).
