Hey Qantas, why is it that ....?

There is another funny thing with QF which was once on the chaser showing how one can board an aircraft without photo ID ! using the online check in yet on the flip side at a check in counter they will ask for photo ID and not your FF card ( once all my check in we're with Ff card)

Neither Mrs B. or I have been asked for ID in years and we usually check in at the QP/Business counter. When travelling together only one of us shows our card and often don't even do that, we are just asked for a name and destination.

Then again at a counter in the Largest regional W.A. airport by movements they will ask you for photo ID and explain why they have to do it i.e. job description. Does not matter who u are WP or wp1 or CL for instance. I tried explaining that OLCI does not require me to do that. The person looked totally unaware. Giving a sheepish look.

Given that my name is a commodity, it's quite feasible that there's someone with the same surname and initial as I do on the same flight. Guess it's ID time for me every time. :-|

Oh the joys of people who only travel domestically :mrgreen:

Happy wandering

Hey Qantas, why is it that you finally send me a double status credits offer which is only available for domestic travel during a period when I will be overseas - and you know that as I have international bookings with you!

Or when I have my SIN address listed in my portfolio...

Hey Qantas why is it that because I have booked my son to go from PER to LHR via DXB this Saturday I cannot send him as an unaccompanied minor? From what I have been able to gather it seems that because I booked him through Qantas but they are Emirates flights no-one can take responsibility for him. I have confirmed this with both Qantas and Emirates.

So I'm wondering if anything happens to him should I sue Qantas or Emirates?

how old is your son?

the qantas site makes it clear that unaccompanied minors travelling on jetstar OR partner airline flights will be subject to the unaccompanied minor policies of the carrying airline. qantas advises you contact the other airline before booking.

emirates offer an unaccompanied minor service provided the child (between 5-12 years) has paid the full adult fare.

is that the case here?

might be worth calling emirates to check if your child was on a full adult fare if they will accept responsibility, and then further, whether qantas will allow you to change the fare (free of charge I would hope) to a full adult fare. (or alternatively, to cancel the QF flight in it's entirety, and change to an EK fare)

if they are not willing, then you need to check if they will let your son fly at all. will they deny boarding?

if they will allow him to fly, it would then be your decision whether to allow your son to travel. my initial thought is that in the absence of negligence, the airline would not be responsible for your son. (so for example if your son got lost in Dubai airport and missed a connection, or had a nap and missed his flight, then no liability would accrue).

Hi Mel Traveller

My son is 13 and has an economy fare which I paid so no award ticket. Emirates said as it is codeshare ie booked on Qantas but flying Emirates they will not look after him. This was after I spoke to them on the phone. Qantas Platinum One line said the same really as he is on Emirates flights they will not look after him. He is flying Saturday night. Does seem a bit odd to me. He is a Gold FF but of course they won't let him in the lounge in DXB. Mind he only has a 90 minute or so changeover time.

He is pretty confident so I'm happy he will be okay to just go sit at the gate.

Thanks for your response I haven't really got any option here I don't think after speaking on the phone to Emirates and emailing Plat One team.

Why won't they let him into the lounge  He is Gold after all, and I have seen plenty of children in lounges. Is it in the "rules" that you have to be accompanied by an adult?

I would have thought so due to alcohol ? In the notes under lounges at the Qantas site it states

"Children under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by an adult when visiting any lounge, except in the United States of America, where all persons under the age of 21 years must be accompanied by a person aged 21 years or older."

Although Master FM was QF Gold from the age of 10 (and thus had club access), I couldn't buy him QC Life until he turned 18. I would be pretty sure it is due to licensing laws.

In fact when Miss FM accompanied us on an AONE4 last year, she returned from LAX on her own - she thus entered both the Flagship Lounge in T4 and the F lounge in TBIT on her own and no-one queried her - she was 3 months short of 21 and didn't consume any alcohol while there, and no-one queried her. 13 years might be a bit more obvious :)

it seems at 13 he is considered a 'young traveller' in any event... and UM services are by special request.

at check-in they might (hopefully) be of more assistance? (at least making the crew aware he is travelling alone).

if he hasn't been to Dubai before perhaps advise him to have a word with the crew so they can give him advice on how to make his connecting flight?

service of alcohol I believe... children under legal age can't be in the lounge unaccompanied.

I wish I was SG at 13! I hadn't even been on a plane at that age!

Hopefully there's a simple solution.

My first ever flight was when I was 26!. And, yes he has been through DBX once, though with me, and he had a lovely time in the First Class Lounge!

Thanx for all your help and comments guys!

I'm not au fait with the rules......however, I'm amazed you and your boy have been left in this position.

Surely, it's in everyones interests to have the lad sorted and delivered safe & sound at the other end!

Hope sanity prevails and the airlines step up and take care of it.

...... you don't start the IFE until we are up in the sky unlike some airlines?
Etihad is an example. You can start watching movies whilst still on the ground.

..... ypu don't have Insky Shopping on flights to NZ?

Just as I want to pre order something I'm told no can do on these flights.
But you can send it to my home for about 2.5 times the Insky price.:evil:
