Okay I am starting to plan a trip in Jan/Feb/March 2011 and on the chance I need to use some FF miles, I need to work out the best way to fly around the world and book any FF seats now, if needed to help with routing and discounts/deals etc.

Want to travel in J, would like miles to credit to QF, SQ or DJ (Velocity Rewards) so a one world or * Alliance fare would be good.

These are my thoughts for now, as in where I would like to travel. Will eliminate possibly Japan if it's too hard, but would like to visit there again.

Also the JAL/AA/DL issue may make any flight planning harder as well

Leaving from Melbourne
Tokyo
Vancouver
London
Various flights around Europe
Dubai
Singapore
Home to Melbourne :-|

Any thoughts/ideas or otherwise most welcome.

I'm not sure if you want to claim a reward seat or buy a RTW ticket. The below is for claiming a reward.

I'm only familiar with the QF scheme... I think the issue you'll face is you're only allowed 5 stopovers, so that means you're likely to fund extra tickets for your intra-Europe trips. You're also bound by a 35000 miles limit for this reward, but I don't think you'll have issues there. This is the OW Classic Award - Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Qantas & Partner Classic Awards - Points Tables

In terms of routing, I'd suggest something like this...

MEL-LAX-DFW-YVR-LHR-(your own intra-Europe trips)-LHR-DXB-HKG-NRT-SIN-MEL

Your stopovers are obviously the ones you stated (YVR, LHR, DXB, NRT and SIN). The other places I mentioned are merely transits (defined as stopping for under 24 hours). So in other words, you can spend a day in HKG, for instance, but still count that as a transit.

I think there's a direct flight from NRT to SIN, but that's on JL. As you stated, the future on that is unclear. To avoid risks, you may want to transit through HKG again.

Subject to availability, you can route yourself a bit creatively. E.g., from MEL to YVR, you can go via, SYD, AKL, or even SFO. However, you're most likely to go via DFW because you must use OW planes, and the west coast is a bit tricky in that regard. I've done something similar, I even routed LAX-JFK-YVR...

Go to the OW web site to see available routes...

Now, if you want to spend money to get a RTW ticket (OW Explorer), the rules are different. You get up to 16 segments, no mileage limit, but you can't backtrack (i.e., travel in one general direction) and must use OW planes. There're some other rules too, but you can use this site to check your routing.

There's heaps of advice here on how to book these tickets cheaper by using AA, so I'll let you to explore that. In terms of routing, it'll be similar to what I suggested above. However, since you can stop over for more than 5 places, you can include your intra-Europe trips in this ticket.

good luck for trip. You may be able to double back within a continent, ie from SYD to LAX-DFW-JFK-SFO then to LHR.
Also if getting RWT you are limited in destinations to 16. If you fly into city with 2 airports you must laeve via the airport you arrived in or they count it as 2 ( New York, London, Tokyo..)

MEL-SYD-NRT-LAX-DFW-YVR-DFW-JFK-LHR-xx_-xx_-xx_-LHR-DXB-HKG-SIN-PER-MEL

That's actually 17 segments, so depending on number you need in EU, can ditch either second DFW, PER on way home, or one of the EU legs.

Two things: there's no OW from DXB direct to SIN - you need to go via HKG (CX) or BOM (I believe that's on the indian carrier Jet Airways)

You can also do LHR-DXB-LHR without leaving EU, and is good for SCs/miles so you might consider that if you dont need all the EU segments.

OW also allows the purchase of extra segments (Allowing up to 6 in Nth America and ? also EU).

Depends on whether your aim is to visit these places, or maximise your SCs/miles? If just to visit, then MEL-SYD-NRT-LAX-JFK-LHR-xx_-xx_-xx_-DXB-HKGorBOM-SIN-MEL is the way to go.
