Hi everyone, long time reader, but first time poster.

Sat 10th Feb, I am booked with Qantas to fly out to uni:

Devonport - Melbourne (10:05am-11:20am) then
Melbourne - Canberra (11:50am - 1:10pm)

I know Qantas says you have to have 90mins between flights.

I've done this before without bags, just walked off the Devonport flight and waited for the Canb flight to board (I know i'm stuffed if the first flight is late)

Without thinking about it (i.e being an idiot), I booked the above flight, forgetting i have luggage this time.

With the flights being only 30 minutes apart, I’m thinking there is not enough time for Qantas to get my luggage from one plane to the other.

Is there any chance that when I check in at Devonport they'll place my bags straight to Canberra.

I'm presuming they'll check my bag to Melbourne, and say they can't get it onto the Canberra flight because there will not be enough time to do so.

What do you guys think i should do? Chance it, and hope they check it straight through, or ask them to send it on a later flight into Canberra. Or do you think i'll be forced to re-book the Canberra flight, and fly later.

Anyone got any knowledge/experience in this kinda situation?

Thanks.

If you booked the flight under one ticket and based on one single trip (ie you chose it as one flight with a stopover) then you should be fine. I have done this a few times and they will mark your bag as going to Canberra and your bags should be packed in a special place on the plane so it is taken off first and placed straight on the Canberra flight.

The only time it will be a problem is if your flight is significantly delayed into MEL. If this happens and there isn't enough time to put onto the CBR flight then your bags will not make the flight. If this happens then they should deliver your bags to your house in CBR for free.

30 minutes meets the domestic MCT at MEL so there is no reason for the bags not to make it

I booked two seperate flights (i.e two reference codes to quote when i check in) because Qantas have that minimum 90min difference in flights clause, so the search function wouldn't allow those two flights to be booked together. I presume MCT, is minimum carriage time or something. My main worry is that theoretically i think than can refuse to carry me/ or my baggage. Thanks for the feedback anyway.

Try to ring the nice QF people and see if they will link the tickets, but i have a feeling they will tell you the minimum time is 50mins. (Issue i had attempting to fly MEL-CNS then CNS-KIX) Actually thats an international connection so maybe different.

Linking the tickets will mean the straight through booking of bags and if you miss a plane they will put you on the next one, right no i would be worried unless your full fare that if you miss a plane you could be out of pocket.

Don't know why the booking engine only allows 90mins, according to what i have expereinced int he past 50mins is the cut off, and as you point out with no bags 30 should be fine.

If you use the multi city option to book it, it refuses it since it is less than 40 minutes connection. Also checked on Expert Flyer and it doesn't show as a valid connection there

If you have your FF number in booking, expect a call from QF telling you it is invalid

Bit surprsed since I thought that the MCT was 30 mins

I've booked it with FF number. So with two seperate bookings, i don't reckon their system will alert them - i.e. i don't think they'd ring me - they probably woulda done it by now if they were going to do so. What's my best bet now? Just ring the customer service people? I've got a feeling i'm mega screwed.

You could ring the customer service centre, ask them to link, beg/plead/anything to not to have to pay extra to change one of your flights, its a good question but you could be as you say mega screwed. You could just pack everything in carry on or is that completely out of the question, even 2 smaller carry on bags they may allow it.

(Not a crash 8 flight is it ?, if it is then forget the carry on idea !)

With 2 separate bookings they do get alerted. I have seen it happen. Friend booked a flight MEL-SYD to connect to SYD-CNS with less than permitted connection and QF did contact him to tell him that he couldnt do it

DPO-MEL is a DH8 and MEL-CBR is a DH3

On the plus side atleast there is not a lot of bags to load and unload !

Actually no. Linking PNRs does not give extra protection for missed connections in that if you misconnect, as you are still on separate tickets, the airline is not obliged to help you out (although of course they may do so if they want to). What linking PNRs does achieve is a note in the system that you are connecting between those flights so they are aware of potential connection problems if necessary. However it places no obligations on the airline to do anything about it.

Good to know, i mis-understood what the linking did then.

With luggage I would not chance it.

I suggest you bite the bullet, pay the $38.50 (and any fare difference) and rebook a later flight from MEL or the earlier one from DPO.

A quick look shows you are travelling at peak time MEL-CBR that day; but you can get fares from MEL from $116 (15:30pm) later in the day. Leaving on the earlier flight from DPO is much more expensive at $260.

Yeah, this was what i thought i'd have to do all along.

Did it, thanks for the feedback all.
