Any pointers for the most economic way of booking a one way fare from London to Syd (or Mel) for any day during the first half of September? I had a quick look and there is not much difference between a one way fare and return fare.

Any help would be appreciated.

A bit fiddly but worth looking if you can consider MH.
Open up a Malaysian Airlines Enrich account and do a points+pay Economy redemption using the 1000 free miles. Should have plenty of flight times. Might be more expensive than the EY flight above though and no miles earnt (you might get lucky if you put a BA number in).

Might be worth looking to see if the EY fare above is booksble via Flybuystravel as there are offers on

It could be worthwhile considering using low-cost airlines as they don't penalise for booking one way flights.

For example, you could use Eurowings/Norwegian from Europe to Bangkok, then Jetstar/Air Asia/Scoot from Bangkok to Australia.
