Hi,

I'm pretty new to the whole points/miles thing and could do with some help to meet a goal. I'm currently living in Auckland, NZ and want to fly return to Christchurch (CHC) with my wife at the start of February. We're leaving on a RTW in mid-February and won't be doing any flying between then and now.

Qantas points calculator shows me we need 8000 points a leg or 11000 points to include taxes (which is preferable). That's a total of 32,000 points or 44,000 points by ... let's say mid-January to give us a chance at booking.

At present I have 15,000 miles and my wife has 4,500. Do you have any hints or tips, or know of any promotions that can help us really push over the next couple of months?

Welcome to AFF indietravel :D

Any flight AKL/CHC booked with QFF points would be on JQ metal.

Personally, I'd just book cheapies with AirNZ, DJ or JQ return from around NZD110 each person.

Agree with Serfty about purchasing a cheap fare and save/build up your points for something worth while.

I'm the same, save your points for something more worthwhile. If your fare conditions allow it maybe look at getting an upgrade on one of the legs of your RTW trip?

44,000 points for a AKL-CHC return trip seems very expensive as your talking a ~$400 airfare if you where to book it normally. Get a few additional points and that could get both of you an upgrade to J (business - which would normally cost thousands) on one of your longer flights, or at a minimum to PE...
