Help in understanding the award routing rules

    Hi, I have previously used the Qantas FF programme, which now from Perth is almost useless. So I am now looking to us US DM for the first time and would appreciate some clarification from members of this programme.

    My queries are:

    1. The booking must be return or open jaw. Are there any mileage restrictions on open Jaw?

    2. Each booking is allowed to have one stop over and this includes intra zone bookings?

    3. There are no restrictions on the number of connecting flights from departure point to destination. Is any back tracking allowed? For instance PER-KUL-SIN-LHR. or PER-SYD-SIN-LHR

    4. Connecting flights must be less than ?? hours.

    5. From Aust can bookings be made to N America via either the Pacific or Atlantic? If so can the return leg be opposite to the first leg?

    6. From PER can bookings to the US be via Hong Kong or Japan? If via Japan is allowed can the booking be via Sydney?

    Early next year I am planning to go to the Caribbean from Perth and finding it is a challenge as a first up USDM booking. Any guidance would be appreciated.

    As US in now in OneWorld you are limited to OW, including QF, and non alliance USDM partners. A big difference from before 31 March.

    You need to look at the award charts.

    check out the US Dividend Miles membership guide. It's a quick read (unlike the QFFF terms and conditions) and will answer may of your questions.

    You questions:

    1: answered in guide
    2: answered in guide
    3: not stated in the guide but there is a restriction of 5 segments each way on your itinerary. Minor back-tracking is not a problem (eg KUL-SIN or ICN-NRT). Some even get away with major back-tracking... but as you'll see in the guide there are restrictions such as 'most direct route' which agents can use to squash anything too outrageous.
    4: in guide
    5: either is fine, but watch max permitted mileage (MPM).
    6: same as 5. MPM is sometimes enforced by USDM agents and can restrict your desired routing.

    Thanks for the help and guidance. My missing link was the US Dividend Miles membership guide which as you stated provided the answers to my questions.
    I think I understand how it works now so I'll give it a go.

    Feel free to post your suggested routing here and we can give you some tips, especially if USDM knocks it back for any reason. There are a lot of experts on routing rules, MPM, products etc in this forum.

    Out of PER, if you can find availability I would definitely be recommending CX or QR - both have outstanding J products.

    What do you think the chances are of this routing being booked?

    MEL-SYD-JNB/-JFK-MIA/-LAX-MEL

    I expect this is way over the MPM.
