I'm almost at QF Platinum, but need another 300 SCs.

I've got some trips booked for this week and next, 2 x MEL/SYD @30 sc each then MEL-SYD-AKL-BNE-MEL (scenic route) which will get me 65sc.

I know there will be 2 more trips from MEL - AKL, but can't rely on the scenic route every time.

Any thoughts on good cheap options for the last 200 sc by the end of Mar?

I missed Plat last year by 110 SCs and 40 SCs the year before, so this year I'm going to make sure I get there!

thanks

Steve.

I wouldn't call 300SCs away to be nearly at Platinum tbh

How do you manage to get 30 SCs on SYD/MEL?

Obvious ways to increase SC earning would be to use LAN business class from AKL-SYD for a fare that is in the QF economy range of prices. AKL-SYD-AKL is approximately $720 inc taxes and gets 160SCs .

By the end of next week I'll need 205 with Feb and March to get the remainder. Quite a few trips from Mel to Syd coming up too so I'm very close.

MEL-SYD is 10 on Red-E, then SYD-MEL is 20 on Flexi Saver = 30 per trip.

I checked LAN yesterday and found that it was $2000 for Bus, and only $1200 Econ on QF. Expensive week I guess, but will check again for a few weeks time as I'll be going back to AKL early Feb.

For the LAN special be sure to check on LA website not QF (the QF codeshare is much more expensive).

If you are sure you will be back to AKL then consider one of the I class specials currently on (matching NZ sale) - will probably stop being sold 23 January. Something like AKL-MEL-AKL in business for about NZ$737 each way including taxes @ 80 SCs. There are cheaper fares in terms of $ / SC (eg domestic sales) but you need a lot of time as most are 10 SCs per flight and can only do safely 6 flights a day.

As you seem to be travelling MEL-SYD a reasonable amount, you could consider the D class Business (DOX) travel for $445 e/w and you get 40SC. (Normal J fare is $610)

When you Consider that Flexi Savers come in at $228 (WIPOX) and $340 (KIPOX) and you get double the SC's for less than double the additional cost it becomes a possibility.

(FWIW you could also do a SYD-BKK return using JQ

Class for ~$2180 and earn 320 SC's.)

Ross, have you been able to confirm that this is the case?

As far as I know when booking JQ star class the SYD-MEL-SYD legs are booked in economy not business.

My travel agent has come back with $1012 plus taxes for Business Class from sydney to Auckland on LAN, but I've asked her to look into the special that is on at the moment.

Is D class MEL-SYD the cheap price that pops up on the QF website during the quiet periods?

That would be about right. SYD-AKL-SYD return in business class on LAN is about $500 more expensive than AKL-SYD-SYD return on LAN.

The cheapest option would be to book 2 one-way business class airfares from the LAN website. SYD-AKL would be ~$630 and AKL-SYD would be ~$370.

I have seen it posted that

"Promo" fares get you WHY class for the connections but the standard fares put one in J.

However, no one has yet posted any actual experience with this.

LAN SYD-AKL = $ 485.31 (USD)

Plus the Mel-Syd and a cheapish QF Akl-Mel should work out cheap enough to slip through accounts as acceptable cost... and get me to Plat in about 3 trips.

Thanks for the tip.
