I've joined this seemingly knowledgeable community in the hope of making future travel planning exercises much easier. Have done a fair bit of travel over the years, but everything seems to change in between each major trip!

I'm looking to take the family in late Dec 11 and Jan 12 from Melbourne-SanFrancisco, then to New York, then return back to Melbourne. We were thinking of using either Qantas or Air NZ internationally, and using US domestic carriers in USA. We think we'll only have 1.5 fare on points (if we can get them) so we'll be chasing the cheaper deals.

Any ideas on carriers to use, when to book Christmas international trips?

Welcome to AFF!

It’s probably a little early now, but I’d just look for sales throughout the year and be flexible with the dates you want to go. There’s a few ways of getting to the US too, with stops and different airlines other than Qantas and Air New Zealand that would be recommended.

Looks like we are planning trips to the same places, at the same time, with the same entourage and similar fare needs (I'll be looking at 2 paid Y+, 2 award seats using my AA points).
