I am using it to demonstrate how the airlines publish a cabin baggage allowance however they fail to enforce it

Again, NZ allowed 2 pieces plus personal item. I was within the rules.

It may well be that some airlines were not enforcing the rules for some passengers. I don't dispute that. But in my own case, I was within the rules taking far more than the new UK carry on rules.

Under current allowances, if you were on an international flight in economy class on NZ, then with 2 pieces plus a personal item you were outside the rules stated on Cabin Baggage: Baggage: Travel Info: Air New Zealand - NZ Site ) and so their allowing you on with that amount of hand luggage is an example of them not enforcing their own rules

In addition to your allowance, you may also carry on board personal items such as an overcoat, handbag, walking stick, camera or slimline laptop. As a safety precaution, all cabin baggage must be able to fit in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you.

International flights
Pacific Economy and Pacific Premium Economy Class customers may take one piece of cabin baggage with a maximum weight of 7kg (15lbs) and maximum total dimensions (length + width + height) of 115cm (45").

Only if I had no status and the second item was not a small laptop or other personal item. As it happens I do have appropriate status and thus inside the rules (see my previous post).

Ah NZ was perhaps a bad example when taking status into account. Even so, if airlines had been actually enforcing their own rules , then I suspect that there wouldnt have been an external clampdown in the UK

As I said - the rules vary between airlines (which is a good thing).

For a while it looked like EU was going to follow UK and limit to one piece, but seem to have backed off this for now at least.

Kiwi Flyer said:
The UK 1 piece limit is nothing to do with security. Only the airport operator trying their best to avoid hiring enough staff, or deploying them in the right areas (witness all those yelling at queues that could have manned screeners thus cutting back the need for major queues and the queue yellers).

That sums it up. Not solely the one item limit, interpreted to extraordinary lengths to exclude a wallet, but the whole UK process has almost nothing to do with "security" but more to do with cost saving at considerable inconvenience and pain to joe public.

I have no issues with the limit of one piece of carry-on luggage.

I do take issue with being delayed due to lack of facilities (x-ray terminals, metal detectors, staff etc) when it is a regular occurrence at that airport.

Until I see reports of FCC efficiency being improved, I will be transferring land-side at LHR, especially when I have immigration Fast Track access. In theory this should require more airport resources as I have to pass through immigration processing as well.

My solution is to avoid LHR whenever I can. On *A this is relatively easy, less so on OW. I guess OW loses out.

Avoiding LHR in itself is not the solution since it is not a LHR restriction but a UK restriction; departing from MAN, LGW or LCY for example and the restriction is still there

Avoiding UK is also easy on *A, except for those few times actually need to visit there. *A hubs in Europe include FRA, MUC, MXP, ZRH, GVA, VIE, WAW, CPH, ARN, BCN, MAD, HEL, ZAG, LJU. Plenty of choices.

And transfer process at MAN isn't quite as unpleasant - then again not easy to do that on OW either thanks to London Airways.

My LHR experience was very straight-forward in terms of security back in Feb - just about 3 min to get to the top of the queue, no fuss or bother.

However, on the inbound leg, the wait for the bags was about 45 min (40 min of it was standing there waiting for the bags from the particular flight to start appearing on the belt).

What about LIS (TAP)? And HEL?... Who's there?
