I'm onboard.
I'm going to see the Northern Lights in Fairbanks in February so I will be reading with great interest.

SYD SQ F lounge

I got to the airport at about 3pm, and was able to checkin even though my flight was not for four hours. The checkin process itself was not the F experience I was expecting. I was just handed a boarding pass and express card. When asked if I knew where the SYD SQ lounge was I said no to which the reply was “Opposite gate 51”. I asked about a TPR invite, and was told that my BP was sufficient, and they don’t have them. Not even a “Enjoy your flight”!

Fortunately the lounge and flight made up for the perfunctory check in experience.

The SQ lounge has a main and F section. I was directed to the F section which is fairly long compared to its width. This means that there are only three sets of chairs that have a view of the tarmac. I was able to grab one when the flight before mine left and so spent the rest of the afternoon looking at planes come and go, including my 777 arrive.

I asked in the lounge for a TPR invite, and after a bit of to and fro, was finally given one.

And before long it was time to board...

I walked down the airbridge to the plane, and at the door was warmly welcomed. The attendant apologised that she could not escort me to my seat as she could not leave the door unattended. I figured I would be able to find my way to 1F. :) It was not long before the CSM and the crew who would be working the F cabin came and introduced themselves. Dom Pérignon was offered and accepted.

There were three staff looking after three passengers, but their efficiency was such that I expect the service would have been the same with a full cabin.

My seat:

Soon we were in the air and offered the first of many hot towels.

I was also offered more champagne, and so chose to ask if I may try both (Krug and Dom).

Of course:

Why the uncertainty by SQ staff around the TPR invite? I don't know much about it but just figured if you were flying F then you would receive it?

The first class cabin on this aircraft has not been refurbished, so is known as the 'old' F. It is showing signs of wear, however it was still very comfortable and functional.

I had chosen book the cook for my meal, but still had the choice of the menu for my entree and dessert. It seems I did not take a photo of the menu so here is the wine list to make up for it: ;)

I asked to try all the reds, and SQ was happy to oblige. Unfortunately the RWT was unavailable, so only three to try.

For dinner I had chicken soup:

Followed by chicken rice:

And strawberry cheesecake with mascarpone for dessert. I enjoyed the port with this.

I know the names of the dishes would be slightly more refined than I have listed, however I forgot the photos of the menus - remember!

Hopefully that is now fixed. Not sure why they didn't load; might have been the DB wifi slowing things down.

I would have done exactly the same .

And the verdict (apart from the obvious 'have another of each') was...?
I was expecting to prefer the Krug as there is quite the positive press about it. However I preferred the Dom as being slightly more suited to my palate. On the next flight I repeated the experiment over breakfast and while the difference was not as pronounced the second time, the result was the same.

I figured I should get some shut eye so my bed was made up. Considering the light load, I was offered the seat behind mine for the bed. Now that is civilised.

Initially there was only one occupant once the bed was made, but she was soon joined by a friend:

I had changed into the pjs soon after takeoff so I was quickly settled between the sheets to enjoy a delightful sleep. I think I slept for about 4 hours, which is not bad for a seven and a half hour flight. I was woken to be offered my 'supper' as requested, but I decided another 20 winks would be better for me so back to the land of nod for a while longer.

All too soon the flight was coming to an end. Getting changed back into street clothes meant I had to go back to the real world - or what would pass for it for the next 23h50m. ;)

(I hope that is enough to keep peeps happy for a bit - I am off to bed.)
