As a Hilton Diamond, I often get asked this at check in, despite having stayed there many nights for the mattress runs. I mean, can't they see it on their computer?

Do you get asked this at other chains?
 
I think it's more on the hotel, rather than the chain. Some hotels seem better at keeping track of it than others.

I've had 'have you stayed here before?', but also 'here's a gift for your xx stay with us' at other hotels
 
Yes and I find it amusing. Perhaps it's lack if relevant info on the front desk's screen on the customer's history with the hotel or the chain so they may be flying partially blind.
