Has journalism really sunk to these low depths?

Yeah, I'm struggling to see why this was regarded as so terrible. There are still plenty of people who haven't travelled that much and for whom this would be useful info.

For those who have, well I'm not really sure why there is this need for self-aggrandisement. Given we are all members of AFF ourselves, we probably do know that other members of AFF are well travelled and hence not in need of such articles. But hard as it may be for some of us to comprehend it's not all about us.

In terms of the title though, yes I certainly know (and have known for some considerable time now) there is plenty of terrible journalism around but this particular article in no way represent the depths for me.

This article was terrible...poorly research...unnecessary...poorly written! It represents the precise reasons why subscription numbers have declined so significantly.

You're invited to show me your worst!

..........I don't know what the modern generation make of the quality of journalism these days, though I guess many of them may not have an opinion since a lot of information can be had via more popular social media networks, as well as general discouragement due to paywalls........

Only a small proportion would have any idea what quality journalism is so the whole concept would be entirely lost on them. For all practical purposes, many are functionally illiterate - can't spell, can't structure sentences etc. - unless you measure functional literacy in terms of WTF?, LOL, CU L8er etc, that is.

Wow. So the Daily Telegraph represents a quality newspaper for you?

What on earth are you typing about? The Traveller article wasn't from the Terrorgraph.

So, SMH -v- Terrorgraph online-front-pages today:

SMH:
Teenage terror victim
How much you need to be among richest
RBA says property cooling
Threat to expose O'Connor skeletons
Driver killed after truck hit car
Passengers video shock on Flight 112

Terrorgraph:
Terror Suspect hid evidence
Jarrod Hayne
Iggy Azalea wears plunging neckline at ARIAs
Lamar Odom spend $75K on coke and prossies
Lara Bingle something-or-other
Warnie's tweets his favourite list of coughs-n-broads

...oh and this in the Terror: 'Sins of the Fairfax Journo: $1m payout to Corbys'. Hah! When all else fails, Murdoch's clowns are under standing instruction to "put the boot into Fairfax, Labor & Malcolm Turnbull, in that order"

The day Fairfax goes bankrupt is one I will celebrate. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.

A bit silly, would anyone here want QF to go down just because they fly Virgin. Look what happens anywhere in the world Murdoch turns up, the diversification and standards drop.

Matt

You appear to have misread the messages in the thread. At no stage did I claim that the article was from the Daily Telegraph.

You may also have missed that I was the one that provided the original URL link to the article, so I know exactly where it comes from.

What's the point of an article like this one:

Thailand travel guide and tips: 20 things that will surprise first-time visitors

Thailand travel guide and tips: 20 things that will surprise first-time visitors

Surely this can't be the best that a major newspaper can offer?

Or do they get the work experience kids to write pieces like this?

It was downhill once the Kardashian trash became celebrities (in their mind and in the media)

It totally annoys me when the media writes of "everyone is following these celebrities" or 'the world waits with baited breath" when it is only in the media mind that such is the case, but because they think it so, then so must everyone else. I actually wrote a complaint yesterday to news.com.au because all they had on their main page was cough about celebrity trash.

Actually baited breath sounds fishy. ;) On the other hand you've successfully completed the "I wannabe a journalist" essay.

I await responses with bated breath and hope the responses don't abate in the near future.

Clearly you are better read than me - or a whole lot older. ;)

No but the article was not that bad. It was factual and contains some good tips.

I guess we all see things differently.

There is only one true source of quality journalism in this country.

Er yes, there are certainly people here (and not just because they may not fly Virgin, they just don't fly Qantas), as well as many others who have jumped the ship.

As is often said and on this thread as well, "couldn't happen to a 'nicer' bunch of people". Don't forget at one point in time, AJ was targeted with several death threats. I don't think JB or even his predecessor got even one.

Unlike a large media empire, I'm pretty sure there aren't many retirement funds who have their shares in Qantas or any airline for that matter. The only real complaints that will come out of Qantas going under are the risk of air fares going up (who will care) and several thousand people out of a job (again, who will care). Even then, I don't think companies of any kind should be kept alive for the sake of their lack of existence having some sort of detrimental side effect to another. If Fairfax or any other media organisation can't operate ethically, then it doesn't matter if their shutdown would put a real sinker on some super funds. There's no point keeping your garbage in the house because you're too cheap to pay the sanitation tax.

Long and short of it, not the best example.

I agree. The article could actually be of some help to first time visitors

I'd say you presume too much. Just because people don't fly QF or have jumped ship, it is a massive stretch to suggest they want the company to fail and all those people to lose their jobs.

This also isn't a question of ethics. The poster who is down of fairfax just can't handle the truth. They can't handle the fact that fairfax provides balance to the national news services. Many people in this country can no longer even understand what balanced reporting means.

Any index based retirement fund will hold some fairfax and Qantas shares.

Fairfax journalists lost my respect well before some of you were born.December 1969 to be precise.
They reported on a Mataungan Association meeting in Rabaul with a speech given by John Kaputin in Pidgin.
The meeting was broken up by police with the superintendent instructing drummers to use a regular beat.As the drum sounded police batons came down on the heads of those sitting, listening. The meeting soon broke up.The SMH the next day reported this as a native riot with whites cowering behind locked doors.Sadly in a robbery I lost all the slides I had of that day.But I was able to photograph the Tolai marching into Rabaul and was on the sidelines of the meeting with no sign of danger to me or the other whites present.

Sorry but for a long time I have not thought Fairfax has provided a balanced view of the news.
