 SORRY, THIS WAS MEANT TO END UP IN THE "WAITLISTING D CLASS" THREAD AND MY MISSION TO FLY J CLASS FOR THE FIRST TIME. I GUESS IT IS STILL RELEVANT TO J CLASS THOUGH!

And a very interesting read it is too! The very thought of doing something like that had never occurred to me.... but now that the idea has been absorbed I can feel an "itch" starting that will probably only be "scratched" by getting off my duff and doing something broadly similar!!!

Yes, it certainly sounded like a good idea. Pity when it all backfires on you. When I booked the travel yesterday morning (I booked into whY and then planned to upgrade once it had been booked and I had the name of my FcM consultant), all was a go ahead. Sure enough, by 5 o'clock the whole trip had been cancelled or delayed indefinitely (fortunately still in Y) so bottom note here is be very careful and sure that you want to travel. It could have cost me a lot more than I thought.

I can think of ONE advantage to being a "newbie" on FT... the availability of all those UNREAD trip reports!! Good stuff

Yes, yes. My family think I am going crazy. I am stuck to the computer doing "work" at all hours of the day and night. ;)

Probably tough after the F segment you lucky thing ;) . Enjoy the F and grin and bear the whY! Its only a relatively short segment.

Its only short if you fly it just the once - taking off from HKG, circling for two hours, landing back at HKG, getting on another aircraft and flying HKG-PEk makes it a less short segment...

But twice the fun. :p Welcome back down to earth Simon.... ;)

Whilst BC has advantages, it can be over rated, especially when cost is factored in. I have often upgraded on PER-SYD and return and gone upstairs for just 10k points which is probably worth it on a 5 hour flight. I recently spent 72k points to upgrade SAF to SYD which got me a skybed and I wouldn't do it again. It was good but not worth the cost. Buy yourself a good set of noise cancelling headphones, a good neck support and relax in cattle class thinking of all the points/dollars you have saved.

That sounds like great advice.

One question though is how I am going to get through my upcoming MEL-AKL-LAX flight in WHY now that it looks like a 743 will operate that route?

Firstly, call Qantas and put in a request for an exit row aisle seat. Note, call the premium desk! DO this by calling the WP 13.... phone number Mon-Fri 9:30am-4:00pm and entering your WP FF Number - The run of the mill agents that you might get otherwise may not be aware this can be done with exit row seats.

As you are a WP your request should be granted if any are available (mrs serfty and I are already allocated such for QF25 to AKL in Nov).

Next keep an eye on loadings, for MEL-AKL, AKL-LAX and MEL-LAX. If the deep discounts stay mainly 9's you can request a row of three seats on check-in. (Three is easier to defend than four)

Is there much difference between first row in economy, aisle seat 26H, and aisle seat in exit row 46? I think the way the bulkhead is cut out it provides extra leg room than a normal bulkhead. On the seat map 28HJK is showing as available and this may be a better option as the seat will have a little extra width than 26H.

Flight looks to have a very light load right now but still 8 weeks to go. Certainly something to think about but I am not sure I want to sacrifice a forward seat for a 3 seater down the back. I can sleep upright and without the need to recline.

JohnK,

I don't think there is a major difference between either exit setup. Pick the aisle as the window has a large protrusion for the exit slide. If you get the exit and the loads stay light you can always swap to a 3 seat group at a later time. If the flight fills up you already have the best option.
