When you say you booked a MASA...is that different to a JASA?

Who knows what MASA means, it's a completely made up term that means nothing to anyone at Qantas :)

Agreed.

MASA is marginal Any Seat Award. It was a term coined when the online booking of ASAs (at U level) was taken off the website.

I think I have heard of one telephone agent who recognised the term. To avoid any confusion keep it well away from any conversation with QF.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

anyone know why there is such an imbalance in U awards between QF1 (good) & QF2 nil (or QF10) - been checking at 353 days out for the last 6 weeks.
And viewing LHR-SYD and using Points & Pay, it shows at the Classic Award level; 128k points + 2,500 GBP, so that's not an option (fare: Business Saver).

Just tried to book Per-Syd-Cairns-Bri-Mel-Per on a JASA, classic rate was 100K + $203.18 taxes, Was told over the phone after consultant went away to ask that the JASA will be a minimum of 108K as it has different booking condition than the classic. Am I best to try again as I was expecting about 72K + $$ or is the glitch we are all talking about now? Any suggestions please.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

This is from another thread.

MASA is ineligible for the 50% bonus SC offer.

Wonder if / when it will be applied to the DSC as we understand it.

EDIT

False alarm as this post from Shintaro10x showed.

I've been asking for quotes on U class ASA.

saying im not bookong now, but how much for these dates (next year).

My last call was that business class seats arrnt always (if ever) opened up on or near day 353.

There is no set opening bell (in advance) for them to be released, so check everyday!

8 more days for me to test the theory.... Hope it's false :)

Talking to one of the operators last week they mentioned that MASA's are not going to be around for much longer, has anyone heard anything official?

Also she said 'No one really knows about them anyway'

That doesn't sound right. I thought U class seats were on every flight that was available to be booked - until sold of course.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Thanks to this forum and all the tricks I have learnt. I just booked my first JASA. I tried to get extra SC by asking for MEL-xSYD-CBR return, but as others have experienced, the points required go from 32,000 for non-stop MEL-CBR to 64,000 on the connection. QF obviously has closed this loop hole of getting extra SC for same point cost, for routes where a non-stop option is available. I booked the non-stop for 32,000 and $238 cash. My 1.5x SC offer doesn't exclude JASA's in U class, so hopefully I get the bonus SC! This helps my quest for first-time SG.

Just Booked one of these - really painless -dont know if I'm lucky or if qantas are getting their $h|t together. CSA had never done one beofre - no promting found her way though her "bible" and ended up with a succesfull outcome 15 minutes later all booked JASA TSV,BNE,ADL return cost gone up since the last one I booked online a year ago but still good value to get the last couple of points I needed to retain status and catch up with family at the same time.

Believe me, you were lucky.

Reminded of my professor's dictum: someone who boasted of having no complication is the one with the least experience in the procedure.

There are hundreds of posts attesting to the contrary.

Enjoy your luck by all means.

I forgot to describe my call centre experience: first lady had no idea what I was talking about but was very helpful and appreciative of the "coaching" I provided her - once she read ROQ 7740 she was good. She figured it out in the end but it took over 30min to get a couple of quotes. I wasn't ready to book, so I called back later and talked to a guy who knew what he was doing but did try to charge me the booking fee until I asked him to check ROQ 7740. This call took about 15 minutes, but he did double check the connecting itin and confirmed it was twice as many points. He also double checked the cancellation rules (because I asked him to) and confirmed it would be a full refund.

U class is available on all flights, but was told they dont always open up for bookings as soon as cattle class seats.

A few online dummy selections done for "353 days ahead" (final date it allowed to book!) Gave the message/gray colour that the dates in question are either booked out, or not yet open to take bookings.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

U class is available on all flights, but was told they dont always open up for bookings as soon as cattle class seats.

While there are always U seats released on domestic, I don't agree that U seats are available on all international, and less so for P class. Yield decide how many seats (if any) will be released based on various sales metrics, and even then, the inventory on offer may differ between status levels.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Thank you to Princess Fiona, I now have 2 First Class Tickets between Sydney and Dubai, at Classic Award Rates but with Any Seat Awards benefits. I followed the advice you sent. It did have some difficulties, we are going on to Europe on Emirates, but the Any Seat benefits only applies to Qantas metal, so, we booked the connections as Classic Award Seats. Fuel surcharges were minimal, (I guess Emirates gets cheap Fuel), and taxes included on the Any Award Points, so all up, we are ticketed all the way to Dubai, Manchester, Copenhagen back to Dubai and home to Sydney in F Class, except 1 Leg in J, for less than $300.00 (and about 800,000 Points !!)

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Tonight I tried to book a chocolate bar run to Melbourne from Perth in one day in business class but the JASA cash was almost $1250 plus 72000 points each. I don't need the 50% extra SCs that much.
With that amount of cash and points I can do a lot better elsewhere.
It is goodbye 50% status credit bonuses at midnight tonight for me.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Hello, did not know where to post this but am seeking some info please? A few weeks back I booked a flight to Syd from Adel to take advantage of extra scs. I rang as I wanted to book business using classic awards point levels. The operator said I could do it online but when I explained I wanted the ASA at classic rates so I could earn scs - I think had to explain a couple of times and mentioned marginal JASA - she went away and came back and said thats ok so went ahead and booked and I paid extra for taxes etc.
Was just then checking my bookings and noticed it did not have my ff number there. I added that and now it shows up in bookings ok but I also noticed it said class U. Is that ok to earn sc or should have been J as I asked for in the first place? Thanks.
