Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

My JASA ADL - BNE - TSV return in Dec cost 72,000 + ~ $350 so your $158 seems a bargain to me.

Indeed. The word "mistake" comes to mind. It is almost exactly the same price as a classic award. I think a lot of the call centre staff are still struggling with these and occasionally strange results come out at the end. I was very sure to ask at the end that they were sure this was booked as an ASA, and confirmed on the email.

Did you also confirm that it's in business? That was the "problem" with one of mine...

Yes. Confirmed U class while on the phone and again in the email.

Didnt they use to be 48,000 points + cash? Someone indicated that it was circa that also after the change. Have they gone up since?

Ah yes, ADL-TSV just squeezes into Zone 2 at 1,196 miles.

Yes it did used to be 48000 points. But since June 26 the points required for classic award has gone up to 72000. There is one record upthread of getting a JASA for 48000 post June but I wouldn't rely on this happening consistently.

A classic award would have been 72,000 prior to June 26 as well, because they're calculated based on distance travelled rather than great circle distance from start to finish.

I am thinking that is the case now but are you sure that's how it was pre June? I have done ADL-SYD-MEL for 16000 points, when ADL-SYD is 24000.

Are you sure? I have done ADL-SYD-MEL for 16000 points, when ADL-SYD is 24000.

You're saying you've done ADL-SYD-MEL for 16000 points as a classic award?

No, as a JASA. Back in the days when you could move the slider all the way to the left until it matched classic award points.

Edit: And I have just checked my activity statement. JASA ADL-BNE-TSV return was definitely 48000 a year ago, which indicates to me that the classic points must have been as low as that.

Right, that's exactly my point. That's because ADL-MEL falls into Zone 1 whereas ADL-SYD falls into Zone 2.

Nope, that one's of the key differences between JASAs and classic awards. For example, you got a ADL-SYD-MEL JASA for 16,000 when the classic award would have been 24,000.

That's one of the key features of a good-value JASA for status run purposes!

Just got off the phone. Quote for JASA ADL-xMEL-xBNE-TSV was 104000 points. Is this because of the additional stop in the routing?

I would imagine so, saw them around 95000 or so a while ago.

OK, starting to understand. Are you suggesting we should still be able to get the ADL-BNE-TSV JASA for 48000 points? ie less than the classic award points cost?

I can't say "should", but I have got HBA-SYD-CBR for less than the classic award points cost (16,000 vs. 24,000), both before and after the disastrous and extremely annoying June 26 change.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Thanks. I'll try again tomorrow with ADL-xBNE-TSV which should be quoted at 72K based on previous posts. Fingers crossed I get offered to pay with 48K + cash. :)

That doesn't sound right. They are both priced according to the zone. The difference will depend on what you're trying to buy. If booking ADL-MEL and selecting that connecting option then they should both be 16000. Of course I doubt a classic award adl-Mel would include a connection via syd as a valid route.

I just checked now, and it does. 24,000 points.
