I have noticed AA have been talking up their international service improvements/fleet modernisation etc.

Is this route OK on AA or would I be better to take the JAL flight (codeshare with AA) ?

All my previous experiences with JAL have been quite good but that was a few years back now.

I often fly NRT-USA-NRT but being in Aadvantage I always get an F award or an upgrade. However I did fly ORD-NRT in J.A few years ago I would have said JAL was streets ahead but my recent JAL experiences have not been as good.Whereas AA have definitely upped their game and not that much between them really so it comes down to personal preference. The ORD-NRT service is the same 777 set up as the LAX service.
I can sleep better on the AA seats even in J.I like the setup of the seat with good working space. The meal service has been upgraded in the last month so i have not experienced that in J but I thought the F meals and wines were very good.IFE would be about equal.
If you go JAL definitely go on the AA codeshare as with AA you get your status bonus but you dont with JAL.

Just adding the link to the AA page with the 777 pics-

Thanks for the advice ,ended up with a booking that includes outbound on AA with return on the JAL code share (with AA flight number)in May. Trip is built around cheap J fares ex Bangkok to the US.For those with the time and inclination to make the positioning flights to/from BKK, big savings compared to the current J fares ex Sydney to the US.

Advice found on this forum has been invaluable.
