Recently broke my leg and ankle and I am currently wearing a moon boot with limited weight bearing.

In May we are doing a RTW ( 14 flights - 4 domestic ) so I was hoping that maybe someone has also done this so I know what to expect !!!

Any thoughts much appreciated.

No advice but I know exactly how you feel!

I broke my ankle 2 weeks ago today. 3 broken bones, pins and plates holding 2 breaks together, screws in my ligament and joint smashed apart!

I'm no weight bearing for 10 weeks! And I'm a mum to 2 young kids - 2yo and a 6 month old :0

I hope yours heals quickly!! I know the pain you must be in, but I guess a moon boot is batter than a cast and if you are like me, having it up in the air or horizontal there is minimal pain :)

Good luck!!!

Yes. Other than the general giant PITA that is using crutches, the boot caused no painful moments.....mind you a few SYD-MEL-SYD is no RTW!

The tips....

Enjoy the "minor" benefits of the boot

Do not slack on the rehabilitation! Take the colourful stretchy thing + whatever your physio recommends with you! Moving and manipulating that ankle is essential.

Apparently  alcohol can inflame the joint....don't worry about this as it will eventually subside ;)

NSAIDs may be considered too, for prior to descent.

If the leg/joint is at all prone to swelling now then it can get quite uncomfortable during descent, so take something strong 1-2 hours prior to minimise this.

Otherwise I think you should be fine.

Disclaimer- never actually worn a moon boot nor cast myself!

It happened in February, and I did fall in the garden, broke 5 bones in my ankle and leg, a 5 hour operation, two plates and 12 screws. The problem is one bone is being difficult and is not healing ! I thought I would be out of the damn boot by now, but when I saw my real doctor ( as opposed to my husband ;) ) I am in the boot until I see him again on 2/5, still limited weight bearing. No physio as yet. Walking with a walking stick. Pain is not too bad.

Not had a moon boot but did have the pleasure of meeting Buzz Aldrin for chat many years ago while in the USA, he wore one at one time in history :)

Sorry about your accident and know how you feel.
When I travelled in my moon boot I just made sure I had a seat where I could stretch out my leg (mainly aisle or free seat beside).
I was mainly flying Virgin and they were very considerate.

Mrs Rugby had one on for a NZ trip we did last year. She didn't have to take it off going through security here or in NZ. We got a ride on the golf buggy from the gate to immigration at SYD when we got back - I'd suggest requesting assistance where possible - as you would know sometimes there are some fair distances to traverse in airports. Hope you're in J Mrs Dr Ron!

Did a BNE - LHR a couple of years ago with one, but admittedly with only one broken bone.

Travelled in SQ J on points, and having advised them before flying, found them extremely helpful & attentive - wheelchair at every stop, plenty of legroom, special meal service, special lounge service, and the fastest trip through LHR arrivals I have ever had. About five minutes from aircraft door out to the exit through all the secret priority lanes.

Had a bit of extra swelling on each flight, and definitely wanted to keep the boot as elevated as possible. The swelling was enough that I loosened the straps on the long SIN - LHR leg, and doing laps of the plane didn't seem like a good idea at the time.

Good luck with the trip.

I did it a year ago (in fact, went to an AFF meet with it on too - forever known as the gimpy one now!). Got no "special" treatment at all, and I moved myself out of exit rows because I figured I wouldn't be allowed there (despite the fact I found the boot - other than the heat - didn't impede me at all).

No issues with security.

I think this is key :)

Make it easy on yourself. Airlines will be willing to help.

Thanks everyone for your thought and well wishes :D

We are flying either Business or First and we have organised a wheelchair to and from the planes. That was a good idea to take something for the pain an hour or so before landing - as long as I can wash it down with Sav Blanc  .

Now keep an eye out for drrons trip report next month to see how we go !!
