Hello everyone.

I was hoping I could get some guidance. I had purchased some grange wines for my parents, and recently my mum told me she stored them in the fridge as their wine fridge had broken down. I’m not sure of the impact on the wines, and I’m wondering what the best step would be - online research says to avoid temperature variation so I’m not sure how to manage this….I’ve reached out to some wine retailers before finding this site, I look forward to your tips!

Thanks,
Wendy

Hi Wendy, not an expert by any means, but I believe I've read the impact is quick variations in temperature.

Presumably the best way to manage this would then be to take out the bottle and put it into the hopefully repaired/fixed wine fridge, which would be a less drastic change compared to chucking it in a room. Alternatively, put it into an esky or something else insulated and let it slower warm up? You could always vary the temperature of the fridge as another option, which would be another means to slowly bring up the temp?

I can't see the fridge being a terrible option, it was probably better than leaving it out in a super warm place given the recent heat?

When it comes to grange , everyone wants the “prefect” cellaring condition , but red wine are actually more resistance than we thought.

Yes, sunlight and heat are the biggest enemy, since your parents already put them to a normal fridge(4-7degrees?) from a wine fridge(12-14 degrees?) if there is any damages, that’s already done.

I can only suggest don’t waste anymore time and buy a new wine fridge or fix the old one(see which one is faster) and store them back to the wine fridge. Temp. Variation on the cold side(from 4-7 degrees back to 12-14 degrees) might not be as bad as the hot side(12-14 down to 20-25 degrees).

Also as billbro mention, get a big esky or a cheaper version which is a foam box esky for future backup plan while fixing or buying a new wine fridge.

i have many bottles of Grange in my downstairs cellar and I did get the older ones recorked by Penfolds.
My wine cellar does have a wine fridge but I use that more for the champagne.
Definitely avoid sunlight and high heat.
