Bill Bryson wrote a terrific book called 'Mother Tongue', in which he delved into how American English and English English diverged. In his opinion American English had developed more logically. It's a really interesting read
I love Bill Bryson's books - have just got his new one - a short history of nearly everything - that I am looking forward to starting this Christmas!

I just pinched my husband's copy of the latest Lee Child/Andrew Child (his brother) Jack Reacher. thriller. Don't bother. I started to notice in the action scenes Reacher refers to his opponents as "the guy". Well what a Pandora's box of worms I opened. I went back and re-read the book, searching for the action scenes. The worst was the use of "guy" 9 times on one page, then the frequency was 8 on one then it was used , 7 times on each of 4 pages, 6 on 3. Jeepers. Have they not heard of editors? This one must have been asleep. It's clearly been written by Andrew Child as the style is noticeably different. I used to read Dick Francis novels; it was suspected that in his later years his wife had written most of the books, Then his son came on board and took over - at first, without attribution - it was so obvious, a totally different 'voice'. I'm thinking I might write to Child's publisher, I like a bit of nit picking - but the 'guy' thing is either lazy or incompetent.
