You've got to remember that English developed from two routes, Anglo Saxon and Romance (Roman, French). For many situations you can use more than one word based on the different routes. At one time using a Romance based word was considered more acceptable (posh) than the Anglo Saxon equivalent.
Bill Bryson wrote a terrific book called 'Mother Tongue', in which he delved into how American English and English English diverged. In his opinion American English had developed more logically. It's a really interesting read
