GOOD NEWS! Krisflyer Miles to be extended until 2023 [previously April 2022]

Not "some kind". They can be "paid" to be extended if your membership allows you to do so.

Your August points though should already be marked for "free" extension. See below.

If you look at miles validity you will note that there is a View attachment 273784 at left. This indicates which points will be extended "for free" in the current batch. Though SQ have already announced that after the current 6 months, that they will do likewise for points from July to Dec 2022. Mine are shown labelled up till Aug. But we know that points expiring up till Dec 2022 will be extended.

Click on that a pop up appears.

So it my case I will get 917,324 points extended from June to Dec. In Dec they will be extended to expire in June 2022.

My 536 points expiring in July will be extended to expire in Jan 2023. No further "free" extension will occur. Or at least not announced at present, and I doubt that any further extension will occur beyond what is announced.

I am grateful that they are doing this, but I still think the expiry of points on active accounts is archaic and needs revision. Even with the extensions, they are extending only for a short period of time. The result will be three years' worth of accumulated points being spent within a 12 month window and that is going to cause a pressure point.

i know ill probably get mocked for saying this, but I have always and will always think that any form of expiry let alone restriction on points is completely BS. you should be able to use your points like cash on ANY flight at any time that is available to a cash paying customer.
The airline has already received revenue/profit for selling the points, so it should not matter when/where it gets used.

its like the $10 off at flybuys/woolworths rewards points, for them to say they can only be used on weekday between 6-9am and you can only buy full priced items

I do see your point, but allowing points to be used for any seat on any flight would probably push the cost in points sky high.

if they said rewards bookings all had no tax/surcharge payable id be more agreeable, but with consistent increases in them, plus a lot of stories whether its a price gouge or not, plus add in devaluation which I think is even more as greed
I mean, a flight that requires X points to go from A to B in 2021, in 2023 should still require X points, not X points + deval

Any FF program has its pros and cons. And yes the 3 year validity is a con, but it is not a big one. Especially as one can if one only has a small Krisflyer balance also redeem on Virgin Flights in Australia at pretty reasonable rates.

On the whole the Krisflyer Program is for me far superior than for example QFF. One of my best FF decisions ever was to make this my No 1 FF program (I still use multiple programs as each program has pros and cons and times when "earn and burn" opportunities can be better than the others).

ie Outstanding ability via Krisflyer to get J and F Awards (obviously less flights during Covid makes this more problematic for F) on SQ and within the *A. And for example with fees for return J flights to Europe of only $187 per person on my my most recent redemption.

I guess we all get different things from FF programmes. I like to be able to staple together long itineraries using multiple carriers in premium cabins to obscure destinations. Why fly direct when you can connect? Moving to a 'points as currency' model would probably make these types of redemptions obsolete but would probably please the family of five wanting to get one of their kids' fares to Florida in the school holidays paid with points.
 
Good to hear Have notices extension of some miles which were due to expire Feb 22 have bee nextended to Feb 23. If travel returns can use miles on SQ or a Star Alliance award in Europe or to /from Israel which have slightly higher taxes than similar awards through United Mileage plus, but lower mileage required.

I think you are mixing up Krisflyer with other FF programs. ie Taxes and charges are very low on SQ Redemptions. ie Barcelona return in J was only $187 per person.

Yes moving to points being only used as cash for redemptions would most likely kill off the fantastic value to be gained in the current system. It would most likely move from being amazing value, to probably only being a minor discount.

I continue to bless my good fortune of four decades of cheap flights based on Awards Tables in multiple FF Programs, and especially since moving to Krisflyer as my preferred program.

And you didn't use it for a while, and then went to redeem it, and they said you now only get half a cheeseburger , it still costs them 2 bread, meat and cheese to make. The price of ingredients has gone up but so has their prices.

I'm just one of those people that Hates extras/surcharges as it goes against my principals plus makes the experience just not as special any more

Yes you are right I Was referring to rewards programs overall. And although I haven't done the maths I'm sure the increases in points requirements and surcharge/taxes are well in excess of inflation.
But as you said if it were able to be used as cash then the program may not exist

That being said I cannot believe a program can not be profitable when they sell the points for 1c (for example) when most people redeem for toasters, and never use them or let them expire

But Kris is my favourite program too,:)

Different model - your example prices free cheeseburgers in cheeseburgers. FF programmes used to offer points mainly for flying and then they were pricing free flights in flights - like the cheeseburger model. But when they started using their points as rewards for credit card spend or various other dollar based activity, heir free flights started to be priced more in dollars than previous flights. And that means the points are going to have to be subject to inflation.

By the bye, McDonalds has just introduced a rewards scheme and it prices free cheeseburgers on dollar spend, not on cheeseburgers you ay have bought previously.

Toasters operate much more like the cash model you advocate. There is no limit on toasters and no surcharges. They also represent terrible value. Your proposal would see redemption flights plunge to similarly poor value. As things stand, most people do not get good value from their rewards points but for those of us who take the time and trouble to learn the rules and use them to the max, there is super value to be had. The current model works for us. There may be a few wrinkles, but it's a price that most of us think is very well worth paying.

The thing is with KrisFlyer you can use points to pay for any airfare available commercially. Like you can with Qantas. Just that the value of using points in this way is shockingly bad.

To use the WW rewards analogy it’s like as if instead of the usual 2000 pts for $10, it had another dimension to the program wher you could in advance (if lucky) secure a $40 tray of good quality meat for 1000 pts.

It’s like they currently sell rewards tix to us at ID90 rates on the assumption that they would never have been sold otherwise so they lose only the cost of the food and drink. But if points could be used for any seat, the airlines would value the rewards seats at full revenue fare.

Basically my points will extend til September(Extend again til March 2023), and my larger amount til November (Extended again til June 2023)

Not bad, I'll probably look to fly first class ATW next year and use them. I have more points to transfer, but they'll be 3 years from now.
 
My eyes when seeing some of the point balances displayed in people's KF miles statements: o_Oo_Oo_O

I have 515,000 KF miles. I was on zero at the start of the pandemic and transferred about 80k across from Velocity to clear my VA balance and Flybuys balance. I now have enough VA and Flybuys to get my KF balance to about 850,000 if they reintroduce transfers at the old rate of 1.55:1.

Similarly, I have scored about 600k QF points since the pandemic began.

My point here is that it is possible to increase a points balance to an impressive level quite quickly with enough determination and brass neck.

Well I have been using as many of my pre covid miles as possible with F and J awards to Europe.
The majority of my KF miles are from the bonus for transfer plus the KF gold offer for CC points. So now the majority of my points will expire in November 2024 plus the chance of a 12 month extension.
