Well, it was a good ride while it lasted, however, sadly, today is my last day of QFF Gold. I was travelling (relatively) frequently from 2018 - March 2020, then shot off as soon as all the politicians decided that we could open up. So, I guess you could say I flew whilst 80pc of folks were still a bit panicked and traumatised. Got upgraded from PE to J from LAX-MEL last year, which was a first for me (and enormously exciting). GOLD made the trip so much easier due to the AA flagship access and such...So I guess, in deciding how to spend my last few hours as Gold, I thought I would book one leg of a SYD-LAX/LAX-SYD trip planned for mid june/early jul next year.I spent hours and hours last night checking if there was any J award availability arriving into DFW or JFK via AKL or vice versa ex MEL.And to my utter disbelief, the ONLY award flights between AU and USA is QF 11/12 (A380). Not even able to snag a seat on a bloody 787!Have I gone mad? I've been looking for weeks and weeks. I'm still kinda shocked. Are others experiencing this also? As in, you need to be closer to DFW or JFK but there's just not a single reward flight in J in june/July 24 beyond the city and flight pair of SYD-LAX QF 11/12?I know it's peak, but cmon....... so stingy!Or is there some other reason behind this?Cheers for taking the time to read this rant, and hope to hear from a few of you.

God bless the back end systems at QF IT. 😊

Apparently , to RETAIN Gold, I need only 225 SC's, and I've already flown all 4 eligible legs! 🤣

Come mornin I'll be Silver 😞
OK.

Could it be? I'm not going to get my hopes up, as there's really no reason why my SG should be extended. I took 15/4 flights in the period 01 AUG 2022 - 31 JUL 2023, but only managed 375/600 Status Credits.

That being said, come Thursday morning, my Status Credits have been reset to 0, and according to the website, I am SG until 31 JUL 2024, and on the Android app it's the same, EXCEPT for the digital card which says expires July 31 2023.

Again, not getting my hopes up, but could it be, somehow?

It'd be great if the status is extended for another year. The status extensions were marked to end 30 June.
Sometimes it seems to take several days for the wash cycle to go through and everything to be updated for the new status year. If you still have the status a week or two from now, then it might be time for a little glass of sparkling just for the joy of it.

Agree, it doesn't all happen like an IT ballet unfortunately. Just waiting for the silver to appear.

Taken plenty of good screenshots.

Have used my Gold to gain entry into SYD and BNE J lounges on countless occasions. They are fairly lax at those 2 lounges.

Fingers crossed

Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. You had a nice run at it, aiming for a QF tier that delivers real value in my book (i.e. lounge access, baggage, etc.). But like I tell everyone, status is only a consideration if you travel enough. There is no point manufacturing status only to use it in the off chance you fly that airline or alliance. For me I tend to be an abuser of status (ask United how many times I've checked three 32 kilo bags in on their flights). If there is any consolation to be had, you'll be demoted to Silver which means you'll at least get a couple of lounge invites and what not for your troubles.
Kinda crazy because prior to 2018, I didn't care much for the status game. My old man spent 30 years with the Australian Olympic Committee, and they paid his QC each year, even when he wasn't travelling at all. To be perfectly frank, I can probably also live without a QC membership, unless I'm OS.
Well lounge access is a complex question. For my money having something like a Priority Pass membership or better an AmEx Platinum card is ideal, since that pretty much guarantees you lounge access irrespective of what airline you fly. QC membership only really works if there are QF lounges where you are based (I think). Compare that with stay Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge (Worldwide) or United Club memberships where you get the entire Star Alliance Gold lounge access when flying Star Alliance.
Silver literally is nothing. No meaningful perks.
Uhh business class check-in? A lounge invite? Additional baggage allowance? Some priority during IRROPS? Don't get me wrong, it's not as nice as Gold, but I would challenge you to look at the low tiers on Star Alliance and SkyTeam, I have and they are way worse. For instance, as a Star Alliance Silver there are only two guaranteed alliance benefits: priority standby and reservation waitlist.
This is really quite traumatic.
Did a spreadsheet today, and I paid $3767 for my PE ticket from MEL-LAX-BOS-JFK-LAX-MEL.

When I went to rebook (for the exact same event that was cancelled in 2020), the fare came in just shy of $6000, for the same route, same dates, albeit 2 years later.
Good fares are to be had, but you really got to be sharp with things like routings, airlines, and the like. On my most recent international trip to the East Coast of the US, I booked QF flights through an AA ticket (with AA flight numbers) to save hundreds.

Yeah… well this is where the frequent flyer game comes in! I’m paying $4500 return business class to europe flying Singapore and etihad. Through Aeroplan - purchased points. The same for USA… $3200 return business class on United. Again through aeroplan.
Yes, points are an extremely cost effective way to fly business globally, and the best part is status becomes irrelevant since you get all of that built in on your ticket. Earlier this year, I travelled from Sydney to Zurich (stopping over there for 2 weeks) then flying onwards to Toronto, then picking up the ticket at Los Angeles to Seoul (stopping over there for a couple of days) before continuing on to Sydney all in business class with Virgin Australia, Etihad, TAP Air Portugal, and Asiana. The whole lot cost me 220,000 Aeroplan miles + $300 in taxes and fees to book. 160,000 miles were bought from Aeroplan during a 90% bonus point sale for $2800 CAD, with the balance being transferred from my Canadian American Express Card. Not bad value if you ask me!

Speaking of, does anyone have any views as to whether Qantas will grant me boring silver status if I earn those elusive few remaining credits a week after my anniversary date?

Not automatically, ringing them and politely stating your case won't harm your chances though.

And now.... after talking to my brother, who was in the USA for work about 6 weeks ago, I am afraid that overseas travel will become (if it hasn't already) for the super elite only.
Most people do not realise this is what they're trying to achieve.

Not going to speak for KangarooFlyer, but it's not difficult to amass significant amount of luggage to check in if you live overseas and regularly visit your home country. I live in Singapore and regularly max out the luggage allowance (including additional status allowance) with various supplies.

2L drums of Vegemite?

One other point I think is worth considering with regards to status, is to take a look at all the flights you took in the past year and ask yourself, could I have done something different? A lot of people new to the points and status game may book whatever flight is the cheapest or most direct without first considering whether it makes sense to book strategically in some areas. For instance, if you are flying in economy from Australia to North America, there a number of airlines that will get you there, many providing either a non stop or single connection to said destination. Often the prices will be cheap or very similar, maybe the non-alliance airline will have a slightly better routing too. But then you must consider how much would seat selection cost? What about baggage? What about lounge? So in those cases you want to think, would it make sense to book in alliance (i.e. American, Qantas in your case) versus saving a couple bucks and choosing United or Delta? The other thing to consider too when looking back is again to ask yourself, what benefits would I have gotten had I booked a Qantas fare that I actually would have used instead of say a Virgin fare?

Looking back at my bookings thus far this year, aside from my overseas trip (which was booked using points in business class and the occasional KLM flight to save on checked bag charges as I'm a Delta Gold Medallion), most of my flights were either with Qantas or JetStar (within the Qantas Group). For my Qantas and to some extent the JetStar flights I took, the main benefit for me was the Qantas lounge access. Now it is true, I do have an AmEx Platinum card which provides me with access to a number of lounges (including Virgin when flying them) but not every airport in Australia has these lounges, and I would argue that many of the Qantas lounges are a cut above your typical Rex lounge you have access to via AmEx. Certainly trying out the Emirates lounge at Sydney during my flight to Christchurch last year was a real highlight of my Gold card membership experience. The other benefit I sometimes found helpful was seat selection, although as everyone is probably aware, most blocked seats open up at 80 hours prior to flight departure. The one status I matched last year that I never really used was Virgin Australia. I never really had an opportunity to fly them this year, and the one time I did fly them (from Sydney down to Melbourne) I was on a business award ticket, so all my Virgin Gold benefits were moot. The other status I earned last year that I didn't really use much was my Delta Gold Medallion status. So far it has saved me a couple of bucks on a checked bag to Hamburg, and provided KLM lounge access at Amsterdam twice. I'll be flying Delta in October in Basic Economy so I will get a free checked bag there, but that's it. So if I were to take inventory of all of this, I would probably focus a lot more on getting Qantas status, and in my case earning World Platinum status (per my spreadsheet I'll be 105 status credits away after my trip in October with a November 30 end date). I'm still debating how to get those missing status credits. Do I take a couple of weekend trips in November on JQ/QF to earn the status? Or maybe I spend an afternoon flying to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh on AA in business with a connection on the return to earn 120 status credits there. What I will say though is it's a no brainer to chase World Platinum status for the simple reason that I'm guaranteed status for the next 3 years. I'd have QF Platinum till November 30, 2024, QF Gold til November 30, 2025 and QF Silver til November 30, 2026 per QF's unofficial soft landing policy. That for me is worth spending the extra $500 or $600 to make this happen but YMMV. The last thing I'll point out is that even if I have no intention of flying QF or OneWorld next year (and say move back to United), having status with QF is beneficial since it means I can then status match back to United to get status.

No, it's perfectly fine to ask. I was living in a different country (UK) doing a Masters but would regularly fly back to North America. In addition to attending conferences and visiting family/friends, I would also use this as an opportunity to move items between where I was living in the UK and my home in Canada. It also provided me with a way to shop for items they don't sell in the UK (i.e. Crest toothpaste, Coffee crisp, Kraft Dinner etc.). This also meant that when my PhD was over, I only had 3 suit cases I needed to check in to bring most of my worldly belongings back home. In January 2020 I flew over to Sydney start my PhD with 3 suitcases but not before first flying to the UK to do the commencement ceremony and receive my paper degree which the University needed to verify that I qualified for the program. So in that case I was travelling with 3 suitcases from Toronto, Canada to London (Heathrow), UK, then head up to York to do the commencement with those three bags, then back down to Heathrow to take a United flight from Heathrow to LA (then onwards to Sydney). Good thing my mileage upgrade cleared at check-in, 32 hours of business class goodness (including the Polaris lounge at LAX) for just 35,000 United miles and a $600 USD co-pay. Not bad considering I booked that flight as a $900 return flight between Heathrow and Sydney.

Depends on what kind of a base you have when visiting. I'm lucky to usually be able to use someone's apartment and that reduces a lot of the need to carry stuff. Plus, I'm learning to optimise it better and better over time. Last time I went over I had in the checked baggage about 5 kg of clothes & personal effects and 10 kg of souvenirs / gifts (including wine which is by far the heaviest item(s) ). Mind you, I had the same amount of souvenirs coming back. If I minimised the gifts, etc, I could do HLO in the northern summer.

Last time I flew F reward

No check in baggage

I took a bag inside a backpack knowing I would pick up some EK PJs amongst toothpaste and other food snacks and a bag to stock them in… plus laundry was my friend …

And knowing that I could buy anything (clothing toiletries etc) in well Dubai (can't be bothered) or Europe

So by the time I came home I’d offloaded 2 pairs of EK F PJs as thank you gifts for friends
Bought some hiking boots and clothing and voila took one bag out the other and had adequate carry on luggage and then more EK F goodies to fly home to Oz without checked luggage

It can be done

I've done that before, as well. Pack minimally and do laundry on the road. The reason I stopped doing that is security, no one knows what the rules are these days for going through security. Can you keep liquids in your bag? Most airports in USA, Canada, yes, however others aren't as generous. The other thing to keep in mind with checked baggage is it comes with a lot of unintended benefits. For instance, some US airlines will pay you if your bag doesn't show up within 20 minutes (Alaska comes to mind) - I don't mind that. And of course sometimes we hit the lottery with baggage roulette with our bags not showing up. I don't know about you, but using the airlines money to go on a shopping spree, whilst I wait for the bag ain't a bad idea.

no, I'm sorry but almost certainly they won't. New membership year - not relevant to the last one as far as they're concerned.

Mr Seat 0A and I checked in to a flight to DXB with exactly our combined allowance of 116kg - to the massive approval of the check in operator! Seat Son lives there and we hadn’t visited him for a while due to COVID so we had a LOT of things to take over. For example, a dozen Aussie reds, a Le Creuset Dutch oven, a Thumper 4WD battery charger pack and jumper leads, an air compressor for filling up the tyres after 4WDing in the desert, some 1000 count sheets…. All of which items can certainly be bought there, but with a very hefty “expat tax” payable so we helped him spread his dollar further.
