I'm not one to listen too much to rumours but this one interested me !

Was sitting at a bar on the GC yesterday and got chatting to a fellow, who did seem to know a bit and was sort of convincing and was a part of it. Told me that the Versace hotel out on the spit at Main Beach has been sold for ~$150 million and will close for a while. Will go under renovations of ~$50 million and then be rebranded as Sofitel Main Beach. The existing Sofitel at Broadbeach will then be rebranded to either Novotel or Peppers with Novotel being the most likely. I didn't ask what will come of the existing Novotel down in Surfers itself.

Maybe an interesting one to keep an eye on.

Well the Sofitel at Broadbeach is a dump, so probably deserves a downgrade to become a Novotel!

It wouldn’t surprise me if it became a Hilton - probably Conrad

I think Accor is less likely, they have so many properties in the area (there’s practically a Mantra on every block) - at this point they’re just cannibalising their own marketshare.

Interesting that Hilton was the only chain named in the article.

Conrad would be my guess too. I agree, Accor already have too many properties on the Gold Coast.

Mariners Cove, next to the Versace property is being developed into a Ritz-Carlton and super yacht marina. The Sheraton Grand property across from the Versace is for sale so perhaps Marriott will drop that from their portfolio and just have the Ritz-Carlton and the Marriott Gold Coast?

Conrad doesn't have many resort properties though, and they are more unique destination places - Maldives, Samui, Bali.

Looks like the owners of the Sofitel Noosa have bought the Sheraton grand mirage. Saw it in the Australian today. And they also own a couple other Accor properties

Seeing as they already have a relationship with Accor through their other properties I wonder if they will rebrand to Sofitel

Not sure it would make sense to have 2 Sofitels though?

The Mirage has lovely beach access. Hope they can put some money into sprucing the place up.

I don't think that's a given, property owners are usually brand agnostic. They'll go with whatever brand gives them the most return, and if an Accor brand will bring in lower rates (due to brand saturation), nothing stopping them going with a rival brand. This is why it's not unusual for hotels to change brands from time to time.

And Marriott won’t like the Mirage to go as their only other hotel on the Gold Coast is the JW Marriott. And if is more expensive than the Mirage.
