Should my wife go for WP? She is currently 85 SC away from WP.

The thing is, we usually travel together and I am already WP. However, I think it would be a waste not to get WP when you are so close.

What would be the cheapest way to earn 85sc domestically, without visiting the same city twice? (Originating from PER)

Unless she does international travel on her own and could make use of Flounges, then I don't see a great benefit in going for it other than the additional bonus miles. Flounging and access to Exit Seats are the 2 main benefits imo

When does she need the 85 SCs by? 31st May? 31st December?

From PER, its a lot tougher than from SYD/MEL/BNE.

A PER-<red e-deal>-SYD-<D Class>-CBR-<red e-deal>-MEL-<red e-deal>-PER would do the trick (earning 20-40-10-20=90SC's).

As she is only 85 SCs away, she obviously does a bit of flying, so the extra points for WP will add up. However, considering that points are not that useable these days, the amount of that benefit is hard to determine. As she is SG and usually flies with you, the lounge access is not a real factor, unless as Dave says she sometimes flies international alone.

Hard call, but I wouldn't spend much money on achieving it.
 
My wife needs to earn the 85 SC by end of Sept 2007.

I guess another advantage i just thought of is that she could be WP from Sept 2007 to Sept 2008. If she doesn't fly much in 2008, she will be bumped down from WP to SG... which is still something... so 85sc for essentially SG for the next 2 years (if you get my logic) hehe...

Seems like a waste to come so close and not get WP.. hmmmm

On a side note: how does one get access to exit row seats as a WP??? Do they magically get allocated for domestic flights? I'm guessing you can request them for international bookings/???

Is it true WP can change FF award tickets without a 2500pt penalty? I heard that it was an unwritten rule.

Agree with the above posters - not worth much except for the bonus miles - at that level of travel, it might be justified for her travel patterns.

Conversely , why spend the money if there is little value to it

You get no special access to exit rows on domestic flights; on international services it can be requested by phoning reservations

I changed the date of a paper BA award for LHR-TIP yesterday and was charged nothing, so they do seem to do it. This is the 1st time ive ever used that benefit

I believe the 'unwritten rule' is that 2½K point revalidation fee is waived for PS and higher status.

So you can change dates and flights but not routing or carrier (subject to availability).

Just a note that if booked on the sale that ends tomorrow night, the PER-SYD-CBR-MEL-PER routing can be booked for about $800 all up.

(Or maybe that should be "if they don't know the rules". I recently changed an award booking, and asked about the penalty only to be told "Oh no, we don't charge any kind of fee for changes". :))

On CX i should have been charged $110 for a change, but seems status makes a difference as recently i have never been charged, not even mentioned.

If i was 85sc away from plat i would do it, but i also know my current travel plans could change so it may be useful for me in 2008 for example. When i say i would do it of course i would make a trip for a reason, like a small holiday or a trip to see my family.

You are almost gauranteed at least two years as WP, as QF are quite likely to comp your wife early for the second year if she gets anywhere near requalifying.
 
My wife is going to be travelling from SIN to PER on 29 Sept.

Her membership year expires on 30 Sept and she needs the SC earned on that flight to qualify for plat.

I'm worried that QFF may be slow in crediting the points and SC. Sometimes it takes QFF 2-3 days for my points to appear. Sometimes its just hours after the flight.

What can I do to make sure the points are credited by 30 Sept, so that she makes platinum status?

You shouldn't have to worry about it. Qantas may automatically process the change even if it posts after the 30th Sept. At worse case you'll have to give Qantas a call and chat to them about it and get them to manually flick her over the line.
 
I understood that it was the date of travel rather than the date of crediting that was important?

The cost of getting the extra 85SCs is likely to be a few hundred $ and I don't think that the extra benefit that Platinum would give ( especially since she normally travels with a platinum member ) make it worth buying.

Indeed it is; QF seems to be quite good at determining the correct membership year to credit to ; e.g. get a credit at the start of the membership year for a flight the previous membership year and it will nicely realise this and not add the SCs to the current year count; I would hope that it would also work in adjusting the status level should a previous year's credit cause a status promotion entitlement

Dont' worry about that; as posted by the others, QFF will ensure the SC's post to the correct "year" and will adjudicate status correctly, adjusting any points and status bonus as appropriate.

I believe they use the scheduled date of departure in determining applicability.
