Must be a mean crosswind blowing today in Sydney - have watched 3 737's and a 747 go around due to crosswind/turbulence in the last 30 mins. Also seems to almost no movements with departures sitting at the holding points.

High Winds at SYD

I flew into Sydney this morning and it was very bumpy.Sitting in the flounge watching the planes land in the winds. Just saw a 747 and 2 737s do go arounds. A few planes are landing. But there is quite a queue of planes waiting to takeoff. So might be some delays today.

The Air Pacific jumbo that went around just landed but the wheels were on the tarmac at least half way down the runway!!!!!!!!! Must have been fun to be on board for the landing!

Is crazily windy in Syd today. Was on a fully loaded bus on William St that was getting buffeted and moving side to side whilst at a stop

Not surprising, wind is current 200 gusting 52 knots!

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Just had my first missed approach in living memory... in a 747 :-D It's Christmas! (easily amused, yes....also glad not to be on a SAAB340 in those winds!)

FJ911 into SYD - guy next to me looked a bit freaked, I explained either the plane in front didn't clear in time or (cross)winds exceeding max limit - it was the latter, it looked like you could go surfing to the right of 16R, with spray getting coughpit-height and onto taxiways! Also was excited to have a UA 747 landing almost on top of the Qantas Int-Dom Q-bus...

Finally, it seems like there are many MANY delays in SYD today - the guy at the bar next to me in the QF J lounge told me a wall had collapsed somewhere and the catering truck can't get to his plane!

Oh Boy. At PER right now about to board QF580 to SYD..glad its not the last flight back..

Currently sitting on QF41 delayed waiting for connecting passengers. Also heard an announcement about LAX flight being delayed.

Update: pushing back 25 mins late. was talk of wind speeds being in excess of safety limit for ground staff. But currently ok

Saw a QF Boeing 767 go around a short time ago from QF J lounge, and also a JQ A330 with a very scary looking approach, really getting bumped around with wind gusts. Its up to 25 knots of crosswind at the moment!

I know of two roofs blown off, one being a high-rise in Nth Sydney and a school at Manly (with two kids hit by debris).

And numerous trees/wires down. We're having a great day. All our aircraft are grounded at this time. Well, the Sydney ones..

Bumpy landing and two loops around Canberra but only a few mins delay for us.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using AustFreqFly

QF 528 to BNE was only 2 hours late.Crew only arrived at advertised boarding time. Then plane went tech.two other later BNE flights went out before us.
one flight to Perth was delayed because something blew off the terminal onto the plane.
Interesting when they initially delayed the flight J pax were told to go back to the "platinum"lounge and Y pax got a $20 voucher for food. When it did go out no food loaded.

i also had what felt like a near death experience on the Manly Ferry just before they suspended it. The swells out by the heads were huge and i thought we were going to roll over several times. it was enough for people to start screaming
