How often do they happen?
I heard of a Air NZ 747 that had to go around about 3 weeks ago at Bne and last night I saw a Virgin Blue 737 that was about 300m above the ground take off again at Bne.
Not that oftan... I've been on 100+ flights and yet have only ever been on one go-around...
That said, according to QF (or at least it's plane speaking section on Q-Radio). The Go-Around is the unusual situation most trained for... Before a pilot ever gets near a real plane, they would have preformed many go-arounds in a simulator first...

From memory the guy who does the salon.com "ask the pilot" column says that your average commercial pilot will do a go around once or twice a month on average. Not common but not totally rare.
I've probably gotten someone in the range of 2-300 flights and i've only had one. Then again my brother had 3 go arounds on the one flight into BNE a few weeks back.
