I'm travelling to the UK this December, D Class, and my wife and 2 children are travelling back with me. Their tickets are S Class.

My question is, when we all board what do you think my chances are of being able to share / swap my seat with my wife during the flight to help out or alternatively exchange it to the person who'll be sitting next to the 3 of them?

If I check in Business and get a boarding pass, what happens on the flight is surely irrelevant from a miles / sc earned view point?

Anyone else been in a similar situation?

I don't see any problems here. Once in the air and the seat belt sign has been switched off you are able to move around freely. I don't think anyone will say anything to you if you decided to swap seats with your wife to take turns looking after the children.

If you really wanted to give up the D class seat I am sure this can be arranged with the passenger sitting next to your wife and 2 children.

I sat in an F seat for around an hour while the boarding pass holder was chatting to the FA and sampling the scotch on offer.

once you are checked in it does not matter from a miles/sc earning point of view. you could sit in the lav all the way to the uk - sometimes i think that is a better seat than some economy seat.

as for swapping with your wife in D i think you will be fine. i was in first once and my wife in economy. i just asked if we could swap and the cabin supervisor said it would be fine as long as only one of us was up there at any time. we swapped half way through for some good sleep.

you'll be sweet. don't give your seat up, keep it and use it for getting some good rest.

cheers and happy safe travels/

Thanks chaps.

As it happens on our last trip back from the UK, my wife with 1 child [#2 not around then] were upstairs and there had been a f*ck up with my booking and I was right down the back - but the crew wouldnt let us swap so I couldnt help with our daughter.

Don't just make the arrangements on-board with the other fortunate passenger. Make sure you discuss this with either the Customer Service Manager (senior cabin crew member) or at least a member of the cabin crew.

If you don't, there may be a very tense moment when the upgraded person is found sitting in a J seat and the CSM comes around to introduce themselves or they look at the manifest to address the person when taking a meal order etc.

I am sure the CSM will be very happy to approach the affected passenger and offer them your business class seat.

NickP, just tell me the date you are travelling and your flight number and I'll help out by being the pax sitting next to them - I'd be happy to sit in J for the journey 8). I'd even help you by together getting all of them into the J lounge...

On a serious note, just advise the CSM and FA's in your respective cabins when/after you board so they can be aware of the "up and back's" through the J curtain....

Now just to remind you, the date and flight number again?? :D

Agreed - speak to the CSM and alternatively enjoy your D seat/ children's company.

My wife and I did this February 2005 to LA.. She was in Y with our daughter and me in J.
I asked the CSM once we boarded and they were fine about the whole thing. My wife came up and had a sleep while I went back and looked after our daughter..
Because my wife was pregnant and still suffering a little morning sickness, I stayed in Y for the landing into LA to hold our daughter.. The FA even came looking for me.. oops.. should have told them where I was but she was cool about the whole thing :)
