Gift Cards at Supermarkets

Thanks Coops for your full explanation. Now I've got it! I notice that most people are using Platinum Edge which gives 3:1 for purchases of the $88 card (if not their existing supply of discounted Wish cards.)
i use the Amex David Jones card which isn't often mentioned. Annual fee only $99 gives 3 Reward points per $ for supermarket and petrol station purchases. These convert at the rate of 1 Reward point x 0.75 for QFF (i.e. 2.25 points per $. Also 30,000 Reward points for joining and if you're lucky, a negotiated bonus of 5000 points for a supplementary card that is free for the first year.

A good entry card for someone who doesn't want to pay the high annual fee for other premium Amex cards. Referrals welcome :).

Damn, I thought I was winning with 53! I've given up now. Very happy with that extra 14k Asia Miles and $233 of extra value.

I am only at 30 now.. and my local woolies supervisor kinda gimme a look when he saw me today... only managed to get double points with explorer card...

I too use the DJ Amex card for the reasons you pointed out.
The platinum edge card doesn't earn the same earn rate for petrol stations which the DJ amex
card does. The DJ Amex card does not have the 0.5 earn rate for Govt & utility bills either.

Is it actually worth while stocking up to $6000 in gift cards. If you don't use it quickly, that $6000 could be say offsetting your loan. Yes I know lots of variables but I think people are starting to abuse such schemes.

Loan 3.75% per annum?

Discount on these cards is at least 5%. Plus what ever points you generate via credit card purchase.

So you're ahead 1.25%. Surely you'd use these within 1 to 2 months?

It all counts!

It's certainly not for everyone. If you aren't prepared to spend the time to save some money it's definitely not for you. Me, I prefer bargain hunting to working. Money I save is taxed at 0%. Money I earn is taxed at almost 50%!

At a 5 to 20% discount, it's a definite winner for me even with a mortgage. These will be gone within a month for me with large bills like strata and rates.

I'm hoping for another 50 or so.

Only 70 cards? And only at 5% discount? That's poor for you DrRalph :)

Sorry Betty. Poorly organised I know! Only had a $2000 stock pile of 10 to 20% off WISH cards ready to go.

With the advent of these multiple types of "eftpos", MasterCards etc etc available at Coles/Woolies, and the regular fee free loads etc, you don't need to use a credit card other than to buy the discounted Wish cards in the first place.

The only limitation/PITA with this one is the $88 limit...would be nice to be $500.

Fair enough. Each to their own. If you are taxed at 50%, maybe working an extra 1-2 hour (if applicable), instead of running around getting gift cards might work out to be around the same.

That's absolutely the way that it works for me. Credit card is rarely used. I keep these perfect gift cards or the Coles Prepaid MasterCards or which other ones I have that have been purchased at a discount with me at all times.

Agree. I would prefer larger denominations. But excepting for WISH cards, $500 denominations of these types of products are hard to get.

Possibly. But as I said I prefer to save money than to earn money. I work smart, not hard.

Currently the personal tax rate tops out at 49%. The 2% deficit repair surcharge is due to be dropped on June 30th so from July 1st the new rate should be 47%. Saving using tax free rebates and kickers is worth a lot to many of us.

How easy is it to buy these prepaid MasterCard's? Could in do it at the self checkout and run through 10 $88 payments? Or do they need intervention from a Coles person? Or I guess the Woolies one is probably about the same?

Don't buy from a Coles supermarket, you only get $100 max per card. Buy from Coles Financial Services Pty Ltd web site, so you can order a $1000 card. $5 per card, free post.

Agree. Those are $1000 cards are better value and easier to use but online use only. Shame the reloadable product can't be loaded at Coles stores even if just with the eftpos cards from these offers. Having said that, I met someone at a function who works within Woolies' financial services business and he suggested with their own switch, Coles and Woolies' cost of CC acceptance is very tiny like 0.2%. Guess every bit counts.

I admire your optimism. Our mates in Canberra are already looking at ways to ensure you will not see at least some of that 2% back (increased Medicare levy is one idea).
