Getting discounts for AAA and AARP membership in US hotels

Do hotels actually check your membership cards when checking in when booking under these, or other discounts? If so, is there a way around it apart from joining?

They can but rarely do, I checked in today and no request. I have however been asked at some hotels. Given membership is $29, it's not much of an ask.

Are you chaps using 'proper' USA AAA cards or are using a card from another country (a motoring card of some sort)?

The RACV card has a AAA membership number in little print on the back.

I always make sure I have the card (RACV) on me, but have never been asked to produce it.

I use my RACQ card and it has been accepted apart from a couple of Gap outlets in Florida which should have an AAA discount.I complained to RACQ and gap and the staff have educated I was told.
I used an AARP card in my 50s as it gives good discounts on car rentals,national Parks passes etc.But the senior rate is 62 or 65 so I have no need to join AARP any more.

PS-I have been asked to produce my card several times.
Check out all the other discounts that AAA gives you as well as hotels.
Often now use my QLD Seniors card-even gets a discount on the NYC metrocard.

I made bookings with Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel on a AAA rate then contacted them and advised them I will be travelling with RACQ card and the booking was accepted no questions asked

Never had my RACWA card checked. Equally, never been asked to produce proof of age (but that could be because it's a bit obvious) nor to justify any hotel discounts that I may have used. Almost tempts me to try for youth or female discounts where they exist.

Yes.

I have also used my Victorian Seniors card in Hong Kong and my Australian DVA card in the USA.

In Vegas clubs women often get free entry and free drinks...
