My elderly parents are due to fly out from Perth to Melbourne in 10 days time.
I have transferred the points to get them an upgrade but no redeemption seats are available
Question Qantas has show 9 plus available business seats on the flight
What's the likelihood of them getting an upgrade ?
I know this question has probably been beaten to dead but it would be handy for them if they can get the upgrade

Thanks for your help in advance

If they have access to the Qantas club, the odds for an on-departure upgrade would be good with that level of availability.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

They have a couple of invites to Qantas Club the ones you receive when you receive silver status will that be ok as they are not Qantas club members

Yes no problem, once inside the club everyone is treated the same, no matter how they got in there. All they need to do is go to the service counter with their boarding passes and ask if it's possible to upgrade using points.

Also if hoping to upgrade in the lounge, obviously the earlier they get to the airport the better - I would advise they get to the lounge at least an hour and maybe even more before the flight.

You should also keep checking online in the days leading up to the flight, as with that much availability in business Qantas may release additional award seats - and it's always better to have a confirmed upgrade than play the lottery at the airport.

Don't forget the check in Kiosks can also prompt you to upgrade on points if it is available too. might be worth trying that first

I'd forgotten about the kiosks - one problem with always checking in online is you don't get to try all the new tech at the airport :)

Do those upgrades come out of "any space available" inventory like ODUs in the lounge, or is it U class only?

I am pretty sure it is the same as the ODU's...

On Departure Upgrade which is what will happen at the airport if they ask for an upgrade.

Of the things here just discussed, ie, asking upgrades at the Qantas clubs, what are the chances of this being applied to international sectors?

Hi AFF

This is my first post so apologies if I don’t use all the correct acronyms.

I know this is a bit off topic but I didn’t want to start a new thread on a similar theme.
I’m about to embark on my first proper international business (J) class flight in 2 weeks time – I’ve had the sheer luck of being bumped about 7 yrs ago on an Emirates DXB to PER.
I’m flying from Perth to LHR via SIN. As work is paying it’s a fully flexible in what I can assume is the full fee business class fare through AMEX travel.
I’m also a WP (platinum) QFF through many dom Y/J, and discount Y with QF and OW alliance over the past 12-18months. As I will be travelling on the A380, it’s been on a bit of a lame dream of mine to travel in the first class suites.
The flight I’ve selected to fly QF31 5 Jan is showing at least 7 F tickets available. I would like to apply for a points upgrade from business to first. What are my chances? Should I remove any thought of this happening, and what is my best bet in securing such a coveted upgrade (in my mind at least).
I’m very excited about J but obviously F would be incredible.
I should also point out my ticket hasn’t even been booked yet but I’m very excited.

Any help would be much appreciated

Welcome to AFF. :D

In reality, if you don't request a points upgrade you won't get one.

It's really up to you if you feel the 35,000 QFF points would be worth it.

If never flown F on the 388 before I'd consider it.

(Note however, that since QF31 is a late night flight out of SIN the opportunity to appreciate any benefit's of first may be lesser than ex SYD or MEL. If your are intending to mainly sleep, then the Skybed Mk II would be fine.)

Thanks. Given it's a 14hr flight and I dont actually have to be at work until the Monday, if I get F I'm gonna try and stay awake and enjoy it like a kid on Christmas.

Ive done one at Syd Flounge J to F

Do you think you have more luck in the lounge vs doing the online request? Or do it on line then follow up in the lounge if I didn't get it?
Trying for PE to and from HKG but thinking I won't get it there, so will try for J on the way back on the A380.

There's nothing to stop you doing OLCI then going to the kiosks at the airport & seeing if it gives you the prompt "upgrade using points" & if it doesn't prompt you with this just ask once you get to the QP.

Unless you've got Qtags on all the bags you're checking in you'd need to get bag tags from the kiosk anyway so you can tick both boxes & kill 2 birds with one stone.....maybe.
