You can find more here http://www.australianfrequentflyer....fice-payments-credit-17109-36.html#post738151 CITI Select seems to be the preferred card.

yep takes a bit of time but plenty of gold in that thread - trying to will myself to start on the 350+ pages of USDM.

krisflyer citi select gives me 1.33 with a good redemption availability and warehousing, particularly with this new suite saver awards but i haven't seen much chat of QF direct earn at 1.5pts. half suspect it will be given the AMEX branded card cut to 0.5 points soon but am considering spreading my earn around multiple cards.

My question is, is it worth $850 extra to pay for a one way LHR-SYD trip in first class? (the SYD-CBR would still be in economy on a dash 8).

I have never flown first class before.

Yes, yes and yes....hopefully, you will & post back telling us how great it was:D

Is it just me, or is this not great value? For example, for economy Australia-USA return you need 75000 miles. To buy that with the current promo will cost US$1650, plus any taxes, plus currency conversion fees. I'm guessing you don't earn miles on award seats.

Conversely, it's $1199 return to LAX with QF right now, which will earn points.

Am I doing this wrong?

Your looking at Y options versus J for not much more, and buying more than 40K has no bonii.

Hmm so one way J Aus-USA needs 62500. Can buy that for $1,320.00 USD (48k+8k bonus). Currently $6k return on QF.

Makes sense.

I imagine south pacific-south pacific for 60k return in J is pretty handy too, but without the ability to search online for award availability, I'm a bit loathe to pull the trigger.

Now you're getting it ;)
At the good end of the spectrum it's close to 2 cents per point to buy. Not great value for Y redemptions but at $1250 in J one way eg. SYD-oLAX-JFK it's fantastic :D

Look on AA.com for availability.

K sheep. Yes you can search for availability on line. You can set up an account for free and do searches. You can also book awards a put them on hold for five days, purchase the miles then "redeem" your award once the milies have posted. Also you get almost one more day to finalize because of the time difference. Ie if you book something now you have until the 5th but this is 4pm on the 6th our time.

With regard to Y awards, if you want to fly SYD-LAX it is probably not great value but basically you can fly anywhere in Aust to anywhere in the US for the same 37.5k points or 75k return plus probably less than $200 in fees. So the $1199 you see is SYD/Mel - LA, it is not $1199 if say you wanted to go to New York or Orlando and it wasn't for April this year when I wanted to go.

I recently purchased points (in both Dec and Jan) for the following awards:

CBR - SYD - LAX then two weeks later to Orlando - all economy - 37.5k points plus about $130 in fees. (there is a paid LAX - SFO in the middle)

MCO (Orlando) - 20 hour stopover in Chicago - New York - then four days later to London - economy - 20k plus just $7.50 in fees

London - xDubai - Melbourne all in First class then day in Melbourne and back to Canberra in Business for 80k and about $400 in fees.

I purchased 60k plus 30k bonus in Dec and 40k plus 15k bonus in Jan. total cost was about $2800 AUD for the points. I have 7.5k left over.

I am sure that if I paid for those flights they would be much more expensive.

Well, I'm happy enough with this offer, even though there's a new one out now.

Only went for 40,000 miles. Bought them late on 31st and they have posted already, along with the bonus 15,000 miles. :D

Not sure whether to take up the new offer as yet.

How did you get a 20 hour stopover in Chicago?
It is probably a touch less than that. Arrive 1.20pm Saturday leave 7.30am Sunday. When you are looking at flights you can sort in order of length of trip. I knew MCO-jFK or other NY airports direct wasn't available so looked f

Hi - I'm trying to get my head around this - I'm interested in buying the AA points because I'm thinking about heading to the US in the next year or so - if I buy the AA points can I transfer them to my QFF account. If not then I presume I can use them on any One World Airline. If I have 75000 AA points and the award is 80000 can I use some of my QFF points to make an award booking.

Thanks in advance for all your collective brainpower

You cannot transfer the points to QFF or vice versa, and given the fuel fines QF impose AA will offer better value in most cases for redemptions.

This month we acquired 90k AA points each using the February bonus offer. All up it took about 25 minutes to open two new accounts and then buy and pay on my US Amex Premier Rewards credit card.

You weren't tempted for the approx. 6k sq miles from using citi select at 5x bonus points for intl transactions? :)

Citi Select costs 1% effectively and my US Amex has no foreign exchange fee. Citi charge 3.3% foreign exchange fee for 3.33 net Kris points so if I was scrambling for Kris points I would have considered doing that but my Citi Rewards warehouse is brimming.
