The machines do have varying, selectable levels of intensity of screening. Any normally used setting will on most occasions trigger an alarm. They can be set to exempt or be less sensitive to different levels of the body so it is not unusual for the shoe setting to be lower than elsewhere on the body.

Which i find so amusing as when you ask them they always say that they are set on the same settings and all calibrated properly. However, and im sure that many of you have done the same, on the same day wearing the same clothes etc, when i go through HBA there isnt even the slightest noise, then you go through MEL and i basically have to nude up to get through, but SYD all i have to do is take off my belt! You cant tell me that they're not all the same in that instance.

As an aside i often find MEL to be the most sensitive but i don't know if thats me.

And it varies between machines at the same airport. I know which lane to avoid at BNE as it always alarms for me when wearing the same shoes, belt etc that I can wear through all the other machines.

Spending as much time in airports as I do, I have observed that some people just seem determined to have a difficult time.
If I come across a grumpy xray person (which is rare) I always make a point of smiling and saying g'day. Most o the time this is reciprocated by a grateful smile and g'day back. The poor things must get harassed all day so a friendly face every now and then must be wonderful.

I actually like being explosive swabbed, its a good opportunity to retrieve watches, wallets from bag and re snug the laptop in its snugglebag, as well as have a quick chat to the "swabber" about how busy the airport is and what's causing any major disruptions etc.

My humble opinion is life's too short for unwinnable sniping.:D

What I don't understand is why someone didn't get this lady a chair. I would have thought it was common sense that if you were going to remove someone from a wheelchair that you'd need to find them another chair while you did it. Unfortunately, common sense seems to be in short supply when it comes to airport security.

Yes ... and which one is that :?:

Ahh it would not be appropriate to share that information on a public forum :p. But I may be convinced to let the cat out of the bag over a beer or three in a lounge sometime ;).
Aah. Totally corruptible as I suspected :!:

OK, NM, name the time and place... :)

Apart from the secret letting, yesterday at BNE airport, I did see a litle old lady in a wheel chair going through security, it was a BNE Airport chair which got me thinking - was this story more indepth field research from news.ltd conducted from the comfort of the writers desk? The reason I ask this is I also saw the little old lady's care giver place her actual chair on the conveyor next to the J check in - hmmmm I thought, back to the original story - some inconsistency here methinks... I can't remember ever seeing anyone in their own chair airside... let me know if I'm wrong (I don't make a point of checking out peoples wheel chairs) but it now has me wondering over the questionable quality of yet again another news report...

As another happy thought, I got to reading the Australian yesterday on my return flight from MKY, which I had jumped a DJ Embrayer (?) only to read about the "fast landing" because of non extended flaps.... on a DJ Embrayer... lol - nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs I was - especially sitting in the last row (that happens when you buy seats 1.5 hours before the flight I guess) looking at the very short extension of flaps as we landed in BNE - I would guess no more than 15 DEG... this also leads to a fast landing and I again wondered over the quality of reporting....
