Does anyone do geocaching in any of the cities they visit. I have just discovered it and it is quite addictive. We plan to try locating caches in Tokyo later this year. I am traveling for work next week to New Zealand and am going to try and get some geocache finds in Auckland.

Maybe if I knew what it is I may find I had been doing it ... ;)

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Geocaching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Geocaching /ˈˌkæʃɪŋ/ is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", anywhere in the world.

I've been geocaching for a long time now on and off. For me, I geocache more when I am away from Melbourne, than in Melbourne. It is a great way to explore a new city and find hidden gem of places. In Venice, I had found every single cache there when I was there about 8-9 years ago. :)

Hubby and I are very keen geocachers. We hit our 1000th find in Las Vegas recently - and when we were in San Fran we completed a cache that we were only the 2nd people in the world to complete ! One half of it was located in Melbourne, and the other half in San Fran. Many people have completed one half, or the other - but only one other had completed both. That was kind of cool !! We also set free a few Travel Bugs on our trip, and they are progressing nicely across the U.S.
It's such a fun hobby, and it takes you to some wonderful places - areas that may only be 15minutes from home, but you never knew exisited !

Locations are mostly actual places of interest. Someone has to hide a physical thing at the location for others to find. At the location, there could be anything from a nice view; a nice garden (sometimes hidden away on a small street), a place of historical significance, a place of geographical significance, a piece of art (like Melbourne laneways) - lots of things. The description for the geocache will also tell you what is interesting about the location.

In Italy, we went to places like famous author's residences way out in the middle of nowhere - In Paris, we found hidden residential gardens; In Indonesia, I was taken to the Museum of Journalism and I can go on and on on the places I have managed to see which I would not find in any Lonely Planet guide.

Just yesterday we found a small park near the water where a cache was located. It was no more than 1km from our house and we didn't even know that park existed.

In a way I have been doing this for years. I have kept my childhood hobby of banknote collecting while I'm travelling across the global I'm always hunting shops out and its taken me to many amazing places in the world. But my rules are I have to walk there and of course if there are bars on the way, I must have a beer (or two). So effectively I have combined two endeavours; collecting + pub crawling!!!! Not only have some nice notes, but I've also tasted some of the great beers of the world. And I will not mention here when one hobby "exceeds the other" as you will have to wait for my travel memoirs!

Been a geocacher for ten years now. Probably hold the world record (nine years) between signing up and finding my first geocache. But once I started, I was hooked. It's a lot of fun, finding the little boxes or tubes hidden away in interesting bits of the world.

The big rule for a geocache is that there must be something worth visiting - if the only reason to go to that spot is to find the geocache, it's not good enough. So there are historic markers, great views, parks, cultural objects. It's a fantastic way to see some of the locations in a city not covered by guidebooks.

I like leaving travel bugs - in my case, little Lego minifigs with a tag attached - and seeing how they go.

All over the world, it seems!

Great hobby for travellers. Or anyone, really.

I'm the same I use them to find cool interesting spots in down time whilst travelling.. Every holiday I make sure I find at least 1, depending on wifi availability as I use the app on my phone rather then updating the hand held GPS.

I stopped caching many years ago but was inspired on a Canada Alaska trip when I saw some overt cachers in a park. Now I seem to see them everywhere!

They might be playing Ingress. Similar sort of concept, except there's no physical interaction - it's all virtual, based around the locations of cultural objects.

There are two teams: blue and green. They battle over control, and use "bursters" to destroy the "resonators" of the other side. It's quite a complex game, but a lot of fun.

Side bonus: you actually have to travel to these locations on a regular basis, so it's great for fitness.

Wow that trailer was not what I expected. Munzee is another version of geocaching but not even close to ingress.

I have tried both Ingress and Munzee and have not got into either of those. I find Munzees to be too boring. Along the Yarra in Southgate, there are probably around 30 Munzee locations - people have stuck them on pretty much every pole and seat. There is no challenge in finding them.

Ingress looks very interesting and I tried it for a couple of weeks - but I just haven't got into it. The mate who introduced me to it says I need to get out and about and get social with people and go together - that is far too much of an ask for me.
