General Medical issues thread

Kinda a travel insurance question but it is due to ticking a particular box.
Partner has numerous health issues and late last year got a new one, currently under investigation so straight away no travel insurance
However if he has injections and then surgery in the affected area with no daily pain relief he is covered , if he is still on daily pain relief denied .
Bizarrely having the surgery actually doesn't preclude insurance. Admittedly it is expensive but we are used to that. This was insurance for a reciprocal agreement country. Non reciprocal countries don't like my spouse anymore lol

Not sure of the question you are asking.
But I think if ongoing pain relief is required then it may come under conditions requiring ongoing treatment??
Curious as to why the injections (didn't ask if ongoing ) and the surgery didn't preclude insurance , however if the box ticked at ongoing pain relief with no ongoing injections denied
It was a rather disheartened household last night thinking no last hurrah to the UK

Presumably because it's deemed to be fixed and no longer an issue (at least if over 12months ago for most TI) but would be captured if ongoing treatment - in this case painkillers, is required?.
It doesn't ask a date for when surgery occured .
Hoping the need for heavy duty codeine will be gone but was just curious . At least we know and hopefully can work towards his health and his travel insurance co existing for one more trip.

I started looking at a travel policy recently and basically said if you have been diagnosed woith cancer past 5yrs then move along we're not interested.

First experience with the US medical system. I started getting some ear ache on Boxing Day - nothing severe, so left it hoping it would get better over the following few days. Around a week later, and it's absolutely no better, if not slightly worse - very tender/painful to touch, feels swollen, muffled hearing. Anyway, I went to an urgent care today (Sunday) and the PA diagnosed me with outer and middle ear infections. I wasn't charged after the consult and there was no mention of payment, but suspect a bill will be coming shortly. The urgent care was in network, and we have a fairly good corporate policy, so not expecting anything extreme.

Slightly different to back home, but the clinic doesn't actually provide a physical referral, but instead sends it directly to your designated pharmac_. Short drive down to CVS, and I was out of pocket $20 for both amoxicillin and ofloxacin drops, the latter of which I was told has a cost of $160 without insurance.

All in all, a fairly good experience. Not sure how I feel about being seen by a PA, but seems common in urgent cares here. I need to find a regular GP, but the urgent care worked well in the circumstances.

Belated report:

Surgery was deemed to be too risky so started on a course of chemotherapy. After an uncomfortable 9 months, hypothyroidism brought that to a sudden halt, but PET scans and a gastroscopy showed no sign of the cancer. Thank you, medical science. Further PET scans and gastroscopies to come as confirmation, but I'm confident.

So that's two cancers beaten in about 5 years. I'm beginning to think I'm immortal. 😊

So if two cancers (and various other bits and pieces) didn't kill me, how about a third one?

A bit of blood in the urine led to a cystoscopy which discovered cancer in the bladder. That's now been cut out and I'm on a program of watch, wait and see. If it comes back it will be chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy but at least these are easier on the system when it's the bladder being treated.

With three unconnected cancers, should I be contacting the Guinness records people?

From memory our friends son had an accident in Colorado. Needed treatment for bone fracture. His parents in OZ received a bill in the mail

A LI contact's sister broke her leg skiing in US. He was miffed that her Aussie travel insurance company put her in a boot and flew her home to Perth to receive treatment. I guess they go for the most cost effective outcome.

I got insurance through Easy Travel with full coverage for the leukaemia - just had to be completed with treatment as they would not insure if 'ongoing treatment'. It's worth looking around as bizarrely, the underwriter of this policy is Covermore - who declined to insure me direct. Go figure.

We haven't had many that will even consider with the primary issue. Now we appear to be down to one only that will even consider covering with is CoverMore
see above for my contradictory experiences with CoverMore. It's just weird. I will NEVER understand travel insurance as long as I live.

Apart from the new condition husband's conditions are all being controlled (?) no further intervention, just monitoring . Just this new one is a bit of a hiccough. At having everything finalised appears that it will be possible to have insurance. Interesting the over 70 years of age made negligible difference. I think he must already tick the old age boxes lol

Not knowing the full details, do you need to add cancer to the TI at all? The question would be is the disease going to cause an issue during your trip? Otherwise you could just take TI for other conditions etc.

They actually refused on all the conditions. It was odd (not cancer ) husband has had other conditions declined but some conditions agreed.
His biggest issue is mobility and possibly breakages . So he needs all the insurance lol

I wouldn't trust Insurance companies not to link it with what seems to normal people, a completely unrelated claim. Eg falling over and breaking a bone.

I've got a blood clotting condition. Depending on how I answer, I get completely different coverage. But every way I answer is factually correct. If I name the condition specifically, it's an oh oh. If I call it thrombophilia, the general condition under which it falls, then it's ok. The treatment for either is always anticoagulant. Go figure as they say.

I am looking at travel insurance for a trip in May. In the past have used the credit card (underwritten by Allianz) successfully, but now can't get cover for some prexisting conditions.

So looking at Insure and go and also Allianz direct. Both will cover my prexisting stuff. Allianz is dearer. I would greatly appreciate any experiences with claims from either of them.

Unfortunately, you just have to do your homework. Try insureandgo, try cover more, Medibank etc to see what gas the best for you. Remember that your CC TI will cover most events such as delay, lost luggage etc, so possibly you only have to add medical TI with a different company.
