General Medical issues thread

I have a feeling you have to pay the amount on board and then claim on TI later - was that your experience? The only time (touchwood) I have needed a ship's doctor was back in 2010 in the Arctic for norovirus but was not charged as there was an outbreak on board.
Yes I had to pay first then claim

Most travel insurance I have priced of late requires a cruise surcharge payment for cover on the ship.
Qantas doesn't charge extra. It's expensive in the first place, but with no extra charge for a cruise, it has worked out the best for my upcoming Greenland cruise. (I have no pre existing conditions).

Though we had the Qantas Annual policy for 3-4 years before I turned 75 and we did have an extra charge for cruises. Probably just for us old f*rts.

I've just been 'chatting' with some friends who wanted to go to Antarctica and they said they can't get insurance (not sure can't or prohibitively expensive) due to pre-existing conditions. They're still under 75, but getting close.

It probably means they are just booking for the one trip. Not that unusual for an annual policy to be cheaper than a one off trip.

With our current policy it is more than double if we travel to the USA. One reason we won't ever go back.
We use SCTI. They are pretty reasonable and flexible. They will let you exclude some pre existing illnesses if you don't think they will be a major problem. I exclude my Knee replacement, osteoarthritis and Haemochromatosis. saves a little bit.
Also we make sure to keep our trips under 45 or 60 days.
