General Medical issues thread

Sorry that you’re going through this. I missed the original post detailing the early parts of your presentation. This is a rare outcome but it is for this reason that I always tell my patients they need the symptom burden or the non-invasive testing to “earn” an Invasive angiogram. It’s too easy to assume something needs stenting based purely on the diagnostic Angio imaging. Functional or adjunctive data is a must. Either non-invasively or invasively at the time of the diagnostic study.
Angioplasty this morning and IVUS indicated SF at artery bifurcation. That is a stent within a stent it was already there to support, one was kinked the other fractured. A TSS inserted and inflated. Stent within a stent within a stent. Might be a record. IVUS shows good placement.
When I told my cardio last week I thought this damaged stent was the problem (we all have opinions, right), he said "We'll see". Nice fella.

Wow you’ve really been through the wars. I’ve had patients with SF but thankfully it’s not common. I’ve only once put in a third stent but if any vessel can take it it’d be an LAD.

All the best.

A f friend sent me a text today to say her husband had passed away, He had had a stroke in October and that on top of an auto immune disease meant he was not able to have anything by mouth and had to be fed by PEG tube into his stomach. He had been in hospital all the time though was booked into a high care resi facility, Very sad as he was only mid 70s and used to love to travel.

My sister in law is rather annoying when it comes to some health issues, especially death. Ok, she’s a nurse. I was telling her today of a friend who was around 67 and had played cricket with MrP. He had been unwell but not enough to go to a doctor. He had a heart attack and died while on the way to do a lecture. Her response - oh well, that’s better than dying of cancer! At times like this I want to throttle her. Ok she works around death but other than MY parents, she has not had anyone close to her die. Quite obviously as she has no empathy. Her parents in their ‘80s and going ok.

One of my neighbours, 80, is in bed at home with pneumonia; on antibiotics. He phoned me saying sorry, he couldn't feed my gold fish while I was away!! ( no suitable emoticon for this). His wife is ok, but not in good health either.

Entire neighbourhood ( all retirees) has mobilized to do all the jobs needed - shopping, calling by, ( subtly) checking that he's taking his meds, looking after his prized garden and vegies.

Love my neighbourhood. 😊

Well starting off this year being given a taste of my own medicine. On our last trip to the UK and Canada I developed bad hip pain.it felt exactly the same as when i developed arthritis in my knee.So as well as my usually venesection but also had a stress echo as I felt maybe I might need further surgery and my last stress echo was nearly 10 years ago.
Well I don't have any evidence of coronary artery disease, normal function and normal sized heart. But as the initial ECG was taken I had a short run of atrial Fibrillation.so now wearing a Holter monitor.

An extra venesection today as iron levels creeping up.
As to my hip an ultrasound showed a bursa. So before I left fo Tassie had local anaesthetic and steroi_ injected into it.2 days pain fre,2 days reduced pain but then as before.

Just wondering what the rest of the year will bring.

How good is hand sanitizer that has gone past its use by date. Mrscove found 3 different plastic bottles that all claim 99% effective at killing germs but the expiry has passed.
Our local supply is completely sold out so that is the reason for asking.

Letter reminding to get another colonoscopy arrived last week. Wondering when Mr Katie will be able to drive, or maybe I'll just make him work from home, and get a cab home from the hospital. Won't need a gastroscopy this time, nor an iron infusion as I had the latter six months ago. Must be coming up to the three year anniversary of the media event for the opening of the QF BNE J Lounge ... I was on prep for my first colonoscopy at that event, and kept refusing food. One of the staff still remembers me and my food refusal from that event! :p

Rosacea continues to be a battle. Saw dermatologist last week, now taking Roaccutane daily. :( And he reminded me to use Soolantra/Rosex, which I had been forgetting about for ages and ages.

Mr Katie doing well after his shoulder surgery, as well as can be expected. Still not sleeping well with the sling and having to sleep on his back. His shoulder, chest and arm looked like it had been painted with yellow highlighter last week. Fantastic bruising!
Sutures came out last Monday, and after seeing him try to button his business shirt with one hand, the physio said he's allowed to use his right hand for that kind of thing. I have been getting some help in the kitchen, too. He is being very good about doing his rehab exercises. Physio told him he could go to the gym (lower body work only) and ride on the bike at home (on a wind trainer); Mr Katie decided to wait to see how he felt this week before getting back into exercise.

I can't see any hospital letting Mr Katie get a taxi home after a colonoscopy. I've been refused an appointment with the doctor to even discuss the procedure because I don't have anybody to take me home and stay with me for the required time.

It's now been >7 years (in NSW and I was get in hospital overnight) since I had my last one when the results indicated another was required in 3 years. Since I haven't died in the interim I guess it wasn't required.

Hvr you are always joking in the humour thread.....but 7 years is no laughing matter.

Can one of the AFF members in your state help with a lift home from the hospital ?
maybe a neighbour to phone and check on you the next day !

I would help you myself, but I live in another state..unless you want to chalk up some points on a status run ? 😀

.. or that has been in a hot car? I stocked up a couple of weeks ago for my up-coming trip but one of the large containers was in my car when it got pretty hot.
Expiry date means nearly nothing. Hot car more of a problem but probably still fine.

Basically, put some on, if it still evaporates quickly enough then it's going to be effective.

that’s not good but how would they know that prior to your appointment? They usually don’t talk about the clinical stuff but leave that to the nursing care people to deal with.

MrLtL wasn't even allowed to come home by himself after a biopsy at the private Hospital. I had to go down the lift, collected him and we came up the lift. The hospital is in our building. :D
I also collected a friend after a colonoscopy - she was asked when she arrived for the appointment, who would be picking her up.

Well at least you saved petrol and time! And Yes, I get you need to have someone take you home. But it doesn’t form part of the first consultation

All SOP when any anaesthesia is involved that someone has to come and collect you from the hospital, but I've never had them want somebody to stay with me at home after biopsies or colonoscopies. I've always had a friend or relative collect me and never tried saying I'll use a taxi or rideshare.

I'm surprised that there was no hospital voluntary-driver transport available for @Hvr. There must be plenty of people in that situation.

That is funny that the hospital is in your building, though.

Sorry if I confused things; it would be me getting a taxi, to Mr Katie at home. Mum or maybe even Dad could possibly help me out, now that I think about it. They are both retired now. :p
Or I leave it a couple of months. :)

With the severe shortage of hand sanitizer I really appreciate your response k_sheep. Mrscove is a use by date freak for many products.
