General Medical issues thread

When I did my colonoscopy, I was well and truly done with the toilet by the time I left home for the clinic. I'd wiped my bum raw though! (learnt my lesson about that one)

Coincidentally, I had an MRI on my small intestine today to assess my Crohn's. I was worried I'd not be able to leave the hospital because you have to take picoprep and then they give you something to stop the gut moving for the scan and once they're done, the prep kicks in and you need the toilet. This was all true, but the effects were much milder than those I experienced for a colonoscopy. I thought I'd want to die by this time tonight, but though things have been...liquid, I feel okay. And I made it home without a disaster, thank god.

Gosh, I've always found a colonoscopy no drama.

Last time I had a combined colonoscopy and gastroscopy (this is all just preventative monitoring stuff).

The last thing I said to those guys before they knocked me out was: "Just make sure you comedians do this in the right order." "Yeh, yeh", they said... 😜

I do find the prep a drama!

Agreed that the two for one method was much better than multiple visits.

As the nurses wheeled me in they mentioned that with a degree of reassurance and a few giggles as they were both good friends of one of my daughters. No room for embarrassment so I just chatted with them until I went to sleep.

I don’t mind having a colonoscopy now.

The first ever one was a bit of an urgent situation after experiencing worrying symptoms on a long holiday in the UK.

Had to get the first available appointment on my return, at the hospital I worked in.

Trouble was the consultant who did it turned out to be the same one I usually chatted to socially around the water cooler or photocopy machine !

Oh Hi..it’s you ! ....Felt awkward being asked how my 3 month long service leave went before the anaesthetist knocked me out.

Would it have been easier if it had been an ob/gyno?... 😜

These sorts of things get rather more interesting when the hospital is more than 400 km from home and with no "nearby" relatives to escort you away after the procedure..... But at five year intervals or so, the insurance takes the hit..... except for the parking. Maybe next time I will stay local...

As usual, wandering

A friend of mine went to play tennis. I began to wonder whether she was actually taking the prep properly.

I know of a patient who did the prep the night before and then caught a 1hr bus trip for the colonoscopy.o_O

I couldn’t keep the prep down. I’d had a headache prior, probably dehydrated and the first glass lasted a few seconds before it was revisited. Couldn’t get anything down that day and felt like cough from the migraine. I called up that night thinking they’d cancel. But no. Had an enema at the hospital instead. You know what? As I’d not eaten the day before and had eaten sparingly the day before that, I much preferred the enema. Go figure.

My procedure is at 9.00am
Dissolve the prep in 3 litres of water. Drink 2 litres of the prep over 2-3 hours, starting at 6.00pm the evening before.
Drink the remaining litre between 5-6.00am with nil by mouth 3 hours before procedure.

My 6th colonoscopy procedure is in a few weeks time. Every two years now as well as a gastroscopy which will be my third. Necessary evils but still unpleasant. Is it weird that I like the feeling as the anesthetic kicks in, that nice drifting off feeling.
