General Medical issues thread

The world expert on this would disagree with you (and so do my ears) :-| I wish people were more educated about this, there is a future generation out there that are going to have so many issues. Its too late for my ears but I hope this helps someone

http://hearinglosshelp.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Tinnitus-Drug-List-2016.pdf

There is a difference between a causative agent and an associative agent.
Eg. Midazolam has been used widely and is a very common drug in anaesthesia for the last 20 years. It's use is so widespread - nearly every anaesthetic has midazolam involvement. That's millions of doses worldwide. Since its introduction there has not been a spike in hearing loss. Similarly ibuprofen an over the counter med used so widely.

While ototoxicity cannot be totally discounted in hearing loss patients to be due to drugs, it's a different matter to say that drug X causes hearing damage just because a "world expert" says so especially when the actual data / experience says otherwise.

Having said that there is increasing recognition that anaesthetic drugs may impair cognition post anaesthetic especially in the elderly. But we are not seeing reports of mass deafness after widespread use of midazolam in nearly every anaesthetic. Though I can fully appreciate that someone with hearing loss might want to find out why.

Distressed all day yesterday and started again today. Makes no sense. Called home to ask mum for help but she was out shopping. Told brother to leave message for mum.

About an hour ago I stopped being under distress and felt better. Strange. Mum called a few minutes ago and asked how I was doing. I said I was feeling better. She said the secret prayer revealed a very strong and persistent evil eye.

Believe what you will but I started feeling better around the time my mum was reciting a secret prayer. This is not the first time either.

The worst times are when you are chatting to someone (whose name escapes you) and then someone else fronts up and you are expected to introduce them to the other person. I've always been bad at names but have reached a new level where I can remember and say their name one minute and then within seconds - completely forget it.

When that happens introduce the new arrival to said person, then hope that they proffer their name in return when saying "Oh hi, I'm XYZ" ;)

And African Americans. Seal has discoid. Selena Gomez has SLE.

I'm noticing neurological signs. For instance I prided myself on spelling. Now I can look at words and not know if they are spelt correctly. As an example, the word 'Niece' above. I look at that and try spelling it Neice. Only my spelling correct tells me which it is.

I don't seem to walk in straight lines anymore. If someone is walking towards me I sometimes confuse the situation by chopping and changing. I have brain fog. I lose words as I am about to say them. But am developing strategies. I didn't have a stroke but it does impact on my thinking. As for people's names - forget it!

Never been good at names so will nearly always use the good old Aussie greeting for blokes-gidday mate.
However if it is someone I have met I can tell them all I know about them even if I haven't a clue about their name.

That alright you two, just remember my AFF handle when you see me next (I answer to that)....

I get the same as well, learnt to keep adding the persons name in discussion or reciting to myself...

So how to rid yourself permanently of the evil eye?

Reciting secret prayer. Not sure there's a permanent solution. Some evil eyes are very persistent.

It feels like a huge load has been taken off me. I can breathe again.

Here's the thing. I had to scroll back through a few messages to make sure I got your name right just recently.

I can never remember Shortens name. So I gave him a nickname (not offensive :p) and I always remember that. How does that work?

I bought an evil eye pendant in Istanbul. I never wear it. That's probably my problem.

JohnK - sounds like serious panic attacks. Hope you can get that sorted.

Is there a Doctor in the house? Stupid question I know - BUT - is there a Doctor in the house who is good at 'Doctoring'?

Just a straight forward answer required to what I believe is a simple question - 'Grandparents Vaccinations'?

We all had the reqd vaccinations as kids - do we need to go back for a second dose as we enjoy the mature years?

Yes here is the link:

Immunise - Older Australians

Apart from these specific vaccines grandparents should still get tetanus booster annual flu shots.

Probably depends on which ones. Lots of parents want grandparents vaccinated against whooping cough etc.

The only immunisations/vaccinations I had as a child were polio and tetanus. Too old for any of the others. Have now had HepB. And now unable to have the rest.

Back in the last century, before I headed out on the hippy trail from Bali across Asia to London, I had several immunisations including plague vaccine - two 15ml injections over a week. After the first I came out in big whelts and rash. They decided not to give me the second. I asked what happens if I contract the plague? They said, "You'll die."

The rats running around in the rooms in Kathmandu didn't engender confidence. But then I survived. Must have been the other drugs.:)

Ah huh - but that is the problem - so many varied opinions - medical evidence is kinda what I was looking for.

The link Quickstatus replied before has all the references you need.

It is based on the Australian Immunisation Handbook, which all health professionals who immunise refer to.

The handbook can be found in the menu bar under Health Professionals and the above link is the current recommendations under the National Immunisation Program

Of course if they are travelling you will need more specific advice on the areas they are going to
