General Medical issues thread

Amarula is mrsdrron's favourite.I love it as well.Nothing better than being at a safari lodge after dinner drinking a few amarulas in front of an open fire.
Ok. I’ll give this a go then!

I’m on one of the generic somac tablets. I have some kind of dysmotility in the oesphagus and being on “blood thinners” I can’t risk bad reflux which I get. Pantoprazole? Seems to do the trick. No more 2am heartburn and reflux.

Just googled Amarula - never heard of it before but will try some soon. is it common in bars because I'll try before I buy
Not sure - it’s very common in Africa and surprisingly we found it in Chile, not sure about Australia. :)

It’s very effective. Our neighbour who has RA is on a high dose but her husband told me yesterday she is going to have surgery to strengthen a leaky stomach valve, or whatever it’s called. I’ve just got muscular slowness which is another kind of auto symptom, I think of sclerosis.

I've always had it..

Untreated chronic reflux can lead to Barrett's Oesophagus which flags as a precondition for cancer.
Barretts is permanent .. drug treatment for reflux is effective with benign side effects
ALL IMnsHO of course:)

Ditto, I remember when it was first diagnosed and I was given tablets to treat - I didn't realise it was a problem until it was fixed and I realised that pain was gone. Was discovered by accident as I was having a camera survey internally to check something else. On them for life pretty much. One GP told me I shouldn't need them long term, but as soon as it's been missed (even 1 hour later than I usually would have them....) I feel it!

Main meds you get here are Lansoprazole or Omeprazole. A brand you see common globally is Nexium, which is Esomeprazole.

he’s missing some muscles in his oesophagus, so has to be careful when swallowing and he needs a dilatation from time to time (except the last one was so catastrophic he has been avoiding it). Reflux seem to go with that, although he doesn’t get it very often.

@rogerkambah I had cataracts done when I was in my late 40's. Surgeon said I was the youngest recipient he had ever seen. Sadly, he thought he was being quite progressive and decided to do one "magnifying" lens and one "distance" lens. As Julia Roberts said in Pretty Woman: "Big mistake. HUGE". I see giant starbursts when I drive at night and I now have glasses again to correct this phenomena.

Don't let any eye surgeon tell you that your eyes and brain will adjust - it's been 5 years now and they still p*** me off.

Get one. Or the other.

Thanks for that info. My surgeon says he will do lenses for distance and I'll have to wear reading glasses as necessary.
I know what you mean about the starbursts.

Anyone having issues taking Crestor for cholesterol?
My medication was changed to a high dose of Crestor a year or so ago. I have been on a bumpy road and noticed difficulty conversing which I put down to some of the issues I am having. Not remembering words, stopping mid sentence as I know what I am about to say but cannot recalll the bit that joins the end of the sentence to the beginning. After someone on this thread mentioned Crestor this week I looked up the side effects and there it is, potential memory loss. Anyone else experiencing this?

I took Crestor for 9 days, so it hadn’t really reached therapeutic levels - I stopped taking it because of what it was doing to my joints and muscles. I was really concerned about the issues you are experiencing as I had heard it was a side effect that affected people. Can you change to another Statin? Really sorry to hear of your experience.

@rogerkambah I had one done long and the other short and mine are fine and that was about 5 years ago. I think some people get starbursts no matter what they have done.

I’ve been getting reflux for years, though at first it’s was unexplained stomach aches when I was stressed. Gastritis. Then the constant throat clearing. Saw an ENT who found my throat had acid burns. Was on somac for a while but these days I manage it when it occurs with antacids and OTC medication. Got caught out last weekend which is why I ended up with no voice (combined with the cold I’ve had).

I will be asking to change meds at Monday's appointment. I never connected it until your comment the other day made me check the side effects. The words "Memory loss" jumped off the page at me and it has to be what I am experiencing.

Another added benefit of being in the AFF family. :)

I didn't know you could have surgery for an incompetent sphincter. I've had a problem with that since my 20s and it's really annoying and combined with now having Crohn's I worry about the long term effects on my oesophogus. I might ask next time I see my gastro.

Yes there’s a lot of experience here. :). Hope the change fixes the problem.

And Bub is probably adding to the tiredness.

The dilation doesn’t fix the root problem. The Oesophagus can narrow over time and if you don’t have any muscles and a narrow Oesophagus to start with it causes major problem. The Dilatation just hacks away some of the build up, but the original problem is still there. However it does mean Mr FM stops choking on things when he eats. His last one was in 2007, so he is well overdue for another, but he is avoiding it.
