General Medical issues thread

Fortunately sample size n=1 is not statistically reliable.
Yes I know.
Though my wife also had similar huge doses of Targin for several months, and she hasn't had any desire for them since switching to Panadol.
And another friend of mine was on half our dosage for several months too after her back operation, and she isn't fond of Endones either. (seems to have been the season for back operations)

A sample of three isn't significant either, but still, I suspect addictiveness isn't quite in the same league of highly addictive substances as some may believe.

My main problem with Targin pills was that I kept forgetting to take them, and then I'd be in a lot of pain for about an hour while the pill I finally remembered to take took effect.

Renato

I don't think you'd be surprised at the number of people who get addicted to prescription medication.

I was hallucinating on Endone in hospital. There are some who spend hundreds a week on illegal drugs to achieve the same state.
Very interesting John.

I've never hallucinated at all from Oxycodone, nor from Pethadine when I used to suffer from kidney stones, nor from Ticarda (half methadone/half amphetamine) when I had a bad cough.

Curiously, when my late father was in his eighties and in hospital, he suffered from very bad paranoid hallucinations when he was given Panadeine.- he was seeing people who weren't there, but who were none-the-less out to get him. I figured this out after a few hospital visits and advised the staff to give him something else.

There was a teaser I posted earlier but no one took the bait.

Targin is a combination of oxycodone and naloxone in a long acting formulation
The naloxone is just there to keep one regular.

If you break a 20mg Targin tablet into four bits, it stops being Sustained Release and each bit acts like a regular Endone. Far more economical.
Cheers.

Dad also suffered similar recently. They call it Delirium. Life feels like a dream and you may do silly things.

In my case I'm not sure how much Endone they were giving me. I don't think they were 5mg doses. My face felt like it was burning and I was in extreme pain thanks to Chicken Pox.

As someone who was regularly called to review post op patients with delerium 3 causes stood out-infection,opiates and anticholinergic drugs.
It doesn't matter if a 1000 people say a particular opiate doesn't affect them many people are affected by side effects or addiction. It is why codeine has been made much harder to attain.Hard for some but good for many.

Very strange reaction you had there. I guess that if you need something strong in future, you'll need big doses of Tramadol. From memory, on me 200mg Tramadol SR was nearly equalling the pain killing effect of 10mg Targins.

When I was on Targins, I only used Codeine a few times because every time I did, it just made it hard to stay awake and I kept sleeping most of the day away.
Cheers,

i have had a couple of visits to the ER with kidney stones. The first time I had Morphine and could easily see how you could become addicted to it. I felt happy, relaxed pain-free etc. The second attack was a bit worse. I started off on Morphine but for the final "transit" of the stone I was given Ketamine. It did the job but as I was coming out of it I had an incredible feeling of depression and was talking in tongues for about an hour - and knew that I was but couldn't stop. It was very unpleasant and certainly didn't encourage me to use it as a "recreational drug".

That's definitely another consideration.

I think based on my last trial a few years ago that Endone is out as having any effect. I'm ok with the 60mg Codeine in Panadeine Forte but I don't want to take this often as that causes other issues.

I'm not sure what dose Tramadol will be effective and any long term effects. Dad gave me nearly a full script recently but don't know what I've done with the tablets.

What organs are affected by long term abuse of pain killers and narcotics?
Panadol overdose can kill your liver!

There is apparently a drug given to stop your heart in some medical procedures that require that. A friend needed this recently to stop severe AF. She was told it’s the closest thing to the feeling of death as she was awake when administered. She doesn’t want a repeat.

Seems a few of my nails are white with band of normal colour near tip. Only on one hand. I’m not cold so not raynaulds. New style of manicure maybe?

Well. you'll need to test Tramadol one day.
I think it's fine. But on the other hand, my wife doesn't like it at all - says it makes her feel like her skin is crawling. She doesn't like Codeine either.

Renato
