General Medical issues thread

Get a physio's advice on which would be the best walking device is for your dad.Plus get your dad to the doctor ASAP to try and find out the cause of the falls as LTL said.
Thanks doc. Dad was in hospital overnight. They did xrays and dad was due for MRI soon. We'll hopefully find out the results later.

I suspect it's something related to nerves although Nurofen Zavance helps but he's been told to stay away from Nurofen and codeine etc as they have caused stomach lining issues recently.

Dad discharged from hospital. X-rays/scans don't reveal anything. Think he was also supposed to see neurologist today. The advice not to take codeine/Nurofen still stands.

No more than an hour at home and he fell down again. Legs feel weak.

Presumably they took blood tests?
No idea what they have or haven't done.

I know some doctors on AFF and they are lovely people but have zero trust in hospitals. I had chicken pox ~ 7 years ago and the day before was given an anti-inflammatory injection and sent home. The next day I almost died and went back to another hospital and they kept me 11 days.

I've had great news tonight. My SIL was diagnosed about 5 months ago with lung cancer (she has never had a smoke in her life). It was suggested to us that she would struggle to see Christmas. She undertook chemo, which did not seem to be making much progress so a few months ago she decided to try alternative treatments.

She got her latest results today and all 17 tumours across both lungs are gone. There is some scar tissue but no tumours.

Very good news. Hopefully she will stay healthy.
This was some years ago but my cousin visited the doctor for some routine skin cancers and had a bit of a cough. The doctor ran some tests and like your SIL he never smoked (or drank) but it turned out he had a very aggressive form of lung cancer.

Wow. That is wonderful. Congratulations.

Yes, a friend of ours developed lung cancer in her thirties and a non smoker. Small cell or something.

My son had his (now) 6 monthly visit to his pediatric ophthalmologist yesterday. Had his usual eye drops and tested his sight in L eye (6/12), R eye (6/7.5) and both (6/6). Results are much better in L eye (was 6/20 IIRC).

Don't know how it came about in the testing, but it appears he's got stereoblindness (lack of 3D vision) - probably due to his amblyopia, esotropia and strabismus, 4 surgeries in his first 4 years. Had never heard the term or knew of its existence until yesterday.

Now it makes sense as he said to me that his 3D glasses weren't working when we watched The Incredibles recently in USA. Looks like I have some research to do.

Blood pressure 93 yesterday. Had me worried a little but I guess lower better than higher.

@QF WP
I was never good at paediatric ophthalmology. But I do remember that when significantly disparate visual cues are presented to the brain the brain defaults to one visual perception, as in either right or left eye vision and not a mix of the two (which results in stereoscopic vision).

Does your son see one clear picture as though it’s a normal movie or two overlapping pictures as though watching a 3D movie but without the 3D glasses

I'll put this here as well, for those that don't have access to the Chit/Chat thread. Mental health is after all a medical issue as well.

For those of you that don't find humour in suicide, nor even attempted suicide, and for those in Sydney next Wednesday there is a lunch time event for the:

News & Events of The Anika Foundation - Supporting Research Into Adolescent Depression

which may be of interest to some.

The speaker wil be Dr Philip Lowe, Governor, Reserve Bank of Australia

More information here https://www.abe.org.au/portals/0/anika-180808-prnt_040718095221.pdf

Also it would seem that in New Zealand, suicide is also not a laughing matter, even rally competitors are getting on board.

If Systolic then something that needs review
If diastolic also something that needs review

Here in PNG, it's common for people to be give a blood pressure like that. I usually ask "over what" as I assume it's the systolic they refer to. Interesting pressure, that one.

I'll have to ask and report back. Will be very interested in his reply.

Nominally that’s low for age.
I would check with Doc especially if you are on pills for the heart/blood pressure.

Generally...
I think salt has been demonise a lot and unfairly so. A lot of people actually need to have more salt in their diet. People who get cramps should have more salt and people with low blood pressure may benefit from salt

Though taking extra salt shouldn't be general advice. Most people should limit it.
but if your BP is usually low,no family history of high BP or heart disease and you dont have heart failure or kidney disease a bit extra is fine

I’m one of these who by adding a bit of salt has eliminated cramps that used to cripple me nearly every day. Though the addition of salt was in reality to bring (increase) salt intake back to a more normal level

Doc was the one who took the blood pressure. I suggested more salt. I've not been well the past week. Bad sleep. Stress/depression and difficulty breathing. Overeating. No chest pain. And I think under bad spell too but doc couldn't help with that one.

Should really follow up blood pressure. I'll head to pharmac_ tomorrow.
