That's not good for the battery - advice is to try to keep SOH above 20%.

Depends on the battery chemistry to a certain extent, and whether 20% in the EV is actually 20% of battery charge - cars tend to have some lee-way with charge below indicated 0%.

The battery shutdown in a Tesla occurs theoretically at -3.5% but that is highly dependant on battery reading calibrations.

Unlike NMC, dropping LFP to 0% poses no safety risk and causes minimal cycle degradation. However, LFP voltage drops very flat at low states of charge, which can make it hard for your car or system to accurately calculate your remaining range.

No, at low SoC it is actually accurate as it is at high SoC - because there is a larger change in voltage relative to SoC.
The middle parts is relatively flat which can introduce some inaccuracies in energy estimations- red bottom curve. For example in the graph 40% cold be 60%. That is why LFP require periodic charging to 100% so the car understands how much charge went in to the battery by direct measurement when it hits 100% which is the max voltage.

There is another issue in most EVs with keeping a battery at low charge and that is many EVs topup the starter/accessory battery from the main battery. And in many cars that's on old school lead acid battery.

And this is turned off below a certain number.
No issue on a long trip, but will likely kill the secondary battery if you keep the car at low state of charge for weeks.

The low power consumption mode activates when the BMS detects a Main battery voltage corresponding to 0% in most cases -at least that is what happens in a Tesla. That assumes of course that the displayed % is accurate (as it is always an estimate).

If the LV battery goes flat, the car cannot be woken up or doors unlocked in the usual way.

Interestingly a 9V square battery from Bunnings can wake up a Tesla from an extremely low voltage situation. But who ever keeps a 9V battery handy?

Wish me luck. I pick up a PHEV Hybrid tomorrow. First gentle toe dipping into the electric lake LOL. It is not fancy (Hyundai Ionic) but it fits my LOCAL transport needs. (40km round trip several days a week..it will apparently do that on battery alone, charging from a domestic outlet ) The other car (ICE) will remain the go to for towing and long trips with gear.

Keep an eye on your fuel usage … if you’re charging at home and that covers your regular trips, such that fuel’s sitting in your tank for over 3 months, you might want to add some fuel-stabiliser when you fill-up.

Great advice. I think I have the option also to just switch it to "Petrol only" mode every so often...

I have noticed this in two of the EVs I've sat in (we like smaller cars so we're inspecting the likes of the byd dolphin).

I don't get this! There's no drivetrain down the middle, why remove the cabin space?

The front should always have a raised console regardless. The console in my EV is actually very deep. EVs also have a very low centre of gravity, so a raised console is a good idea for cornering at speed. Isnt the front centre console a space?

On the other hand, the rear seat does not have a raised tunnel.

I once owned an XM coupe (Ford) with the quite rare bench-bucket front seat layout. The left side bench seat pair back folded forward to allow access into the back as did the driver's single.

Yes, but sitting in the dolphin it felt like the level was halfway between my elbow and my shoulder. I'd be doing shoulder shrugs to rest my elbow on that

Seriously considering taking the plunge from Diesel ICE direct to PEV and skipping the hybrid step - to a BYD Sealion 7 “Premium” (couldn’t see value in “Performance”) .

Lots of features on my desirable list including RWD, genuine leather seats, adaptive cruise control and auto seat positioning.

We have solar on the house roof with lots excess capacity in daytime. No home battery at present but considering.

“Usual” weekday daily driving <20km round trip, Weekend maybe 100-150 range (Noosa, Gold Coast). Anywhere else longer distance travel usually fly. Annual usage averages around 12,000km

Appreciate comments suggestions from anyone with (or without) this model.

Friends have one and are very happy with it. Take a test drive or see if you can hire borrow one for a weekend. (Sixt have other BYDs, not sure what models)
