General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

‘If you are feeling unwell with flu-like symptoms, every state and territory in Australia broadened their testing criteria from Friday (some started even earlier).

"Anybody with acute respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, runny nose, cold symptoms, flu-like symptoms) can get tested," Prof Murphy said’.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

In Spain, 6 million children under the age of 14 have been indoors for six weeks. They are about to be let out for one hour a day no more than 1 km from home and no playing in the playgrounds. Those poor kids I just can’t imagine what those families have been going through.

I’d like to see cafe and restaurants start up again, with safe distancing between tables (with less tables and diners).

At least in QLD from next weekend we can legitimitly go for a drive (50km away), do a run on footwear and clothing purchases, picnic with the household group, or with one other person, some national parks will reopen.

From Saturday, COVID-19 restrictions will start to ease in Queensland

The ones interviewed on tv here seem remarkably resilient and knowledgeable - at least about things like hand washing. They also understand staying inside for a few weeks is worthwhile. In many European countries no doubt many of those kids would have lost grandparents :(

I guess there were a few kids in the USA demanding their constitutional rights.

While the headline is fashion, is not having appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for flight attendants to use a worthy goal?

No problem with the absolute need for PPE, but bit surprised they would have their focus on engaging a fashion designer to come up with a branded range to operate a repatriation flight when the airline could quite well go down the drain in a similar manner to VA.

In a piece on the ABC News website about the relaxation in self isolation restrictions there was an interesting little piece about Rottnest Island .When queried about the re-opening of the island "The Premier said there were three flights due into Perth from overseas destinations soon carrying hundreds of people and Rottnest may be needed to quarantine them."

I wonder if more evacuation flights from India are coming in. As S.A. took responsibility the previous ones it could well be W.A.'s turn this time.

Edit: In an updated piece he is also quoted as saying -:

"WA has recorded just five new COVID-19 cases in the past week, with 55 active cases in the state.

But the Premier said he was bracing for a spike in new cases this week as hundreds of Australians returned to Perth from overseas

Interesting spread of approval ratings for the Premiers. 72% for Palaszczuk and 77% for Berejiklian is good, but obviously someting overshadowing their respective ratings. Newspoll in tonight's Oz.

Mark McGowan has been a pleasant surprise I think to many in WA as to how well he has handled the situation generally. Did smile when I saw the footage of him doing his press conference today, he got what can be described a very Rocky voice of affirmation! The sign language lady took it in her stride beautifully as well.

I didn't see what you are referring to as Rocky (at least I don't think I did), so I don't know the incident you are referring to.

Have to agree that McGowan is impressing.

Interestingly, this afternoon I was talking with a friend of mine who is herself hearing-impaired (although you'd hardly know it as she lip reads amazingly) and teaches hearing-impaired kids.

She is also expert in Auslan. It's only recently that WA has put an Auslan interpreter in major press conferences. NSW and Qld have led on that front for some time.

She knows the WA ones and says they are very good.

The thing that had me gob-smacked was that she said that there are swear-words in Auslan (which they obviously reveal - but do not encourage - the teenagers to use) and also accents! Who would have thought?

I've known this lady for years (on the same committees at primary school P&C and kids' sports clubs) and never thought to delve into these matters before. We had an absolutely fascinating conversation that was really educational and opened my mind.

A great afternoon that may not have happened without covid-19.

There you go.

Apparently some were police overreach.
Now it can be argued correctly that “overreach” is contextual, but drive in religious service and visiting parks are borderline IMO.

Tyrannical power can be subtle and a slow creep
