General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

I went to my dentist for my 6 monthly clean with hygienist and then check-up with the dentist this afternoon. I wore a KN-95 mask in the uber to the dental office and home again.

When I arrived I had to sanitise my hands, get a temperature check and answer a survey re where Id been in last 3 weeks. Once inside the dentist room I had to swish an anti-viral mouthwash for a full minute (it was timed) to reduce any potential viral load in my mouth before the exam started. Hygenist and dentist were both masked and gloved up as usual, so no changes there.

Didn't get the usual freebies to take home either - not that it bothered me as i always donate the free toothbrush and toothpaste to charity anyway.

Sorry, which state again? My last visit to the dentist, 6 weeks ago in Tas was just a normal one, but with a notice on the door about "Don't enter if ..."

Same in W.A. - except they have changed their 'mouthwash' to an apparently stronger one and it tastes awful.

Sorry, which state again?

NSW, my dentist is in Sydney CBD and it was furthest Id travelled (about 8km) from home in months.

I got a call on Tuesday to remind me of appointment and to check if I was well, plus a reminder not to come if I had any symptoms.

On the door to reception there were warnings about do not enter if you have symptoms, I kept my mask on from the uber trip and patiently waited on the allocated X , until one of the dental nurses came over to watch me sanitise my hands (after i took off and stored the mask), take temperature and do the survey. They were noting temperature on patient files.

Im not saying my experience was typical of all dental practices in NSW, but im happy they were taking lots of precautions.

Our dentist has always worn a mask and gloves so no different 2 weeks ago.

Sort of the same at my WA regional dentist last week. Mouthwash changed and I had been warned it was horrible but turned out okay. He said they made it up with 1 % peroxide plus mint drops. The difference was they don't do any spitting out into the little sink - to stop liquid spread - but the assistant did a really good job on the suction for a change. They always wear masks so no difference there.

Regional NSW here.

Attended my regular eye test. Wasn't sure what to expect. All staff wearing masks, sanitise hands on entry. Each room touch points tables etc cleaned between appts. The most annoying (but VERY understandable) part was if you tried on a pair of glasses they got put in a tub and were cleaned with alcohol all over before being put back on display. As the store was a bit busy, took a while for me to choose frames as had to wait for other pairs to be cleaned.

Overall a pleasant experience given the circumstances. Next stop will be the dentist.

As has mine, which is why I said "as usual". But the temperature checks, patient survey, patient hand sanitiser and timed use of a new anti viral mouthwash were all new additions to the usual routine.

Our dentist in ACT was pretty much the same. Good long mouth wash just in case of any aerosoling before the hygienist started, receptionist now behind a Perspex screen and questions on entering.

I had to visit my dentist and I got the usual questions and had to sanitise my hands. Dentist wearing mask and gloves as normal. When I went to pay I had to press all the buttons on the machine and then as I was leaving was grumpily told to sanitise my hands again 🤷‍♀️

So it is not just age and comorbidities that increase chance of death with Covid but fraility is very important. It is very common in Aged Care residents.

Antibody tests show 6% of those in the UK have had Covid,13% in London.

Definitely we masks at funerals.

An easier test-saliva.

More minks infected. This time in Utah.

And those who get a secondary bacterial infection as expected do worse.

That must be the research project Dr FM participated in - she came back negative.

Am with family in the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. We all got a cold this week. Although we are avid followers of the whole Corona thing, and were thus sure our symptoms did not indicate COVID, I thought it good practice to get a test. So I took one "for the team".

Hence I booked into the local COVID screening place. Did the test yesterday - and it was a bit of an affront to have something stuck up both sides of my nose :) I did not react well, but the doctor (and other staff) were marvelous.

I got the "all clear" just 26 hrs later.

Perhaps the most jarring thing was on entry to the testing site. They asked me if I had been overseas in the last two weeks. Usually this would require me to indulge in a drawn out chat, but yesterday I suddenly realised the answer was clear - no! :)

So, in simple terms, most OPs on AFF are, respectively, stuffed.

So a little more on obesity.First the article abstract then plain speech version.

And something the world should have done-actually study what simple things are effective rather than just drug treatment. It was an excellent chance to get a better idea of things that really are effective like masks, social distancing, lockdowns etc.

And as a reminder wearing a mask is designed to protect others not the mask wearer.

And it is interesting that basically all Covid free countries are in the Pacific.Although Turkmenistan and north Korea haven't reported infections they probably are not Covid free.
